Epson all the way. 9pin LX300 should cost you around 6k or so. The 24 pin LQ300+ is a better option both in print quality and speed. I think it costs around 8k currently. As for the ribbons, you get a pack of two ribbons in less than 35 Rs. Talk about economy!

Well you can probably check out your local hardware market, may be TVS or Wipro offer cheaper dot matrix printers. I don't think you will get it cheaper than 5-6k. You can even consider getting a second hand dot matrix printer or one on rent from vendors if you just need it for printing out college assignments. Seriously, do you have any idea about the no. of pages? Getting a dot matrix printer just for them is really pushing it to limits.

Oh ok. I though it was a one time thing. I don't know of a dot matrix printer going at 2k. I don't know the current market rates for these printers, but 2k is way too less. Getting a second hand printer makes more sense, especially when it comes to dot matrix printers. Even if there are some hardware issues, local printer repair guys fix it at minimum charges. We have an Epson LQ300+ printer in our office past 6-7 years and there has been so issues whatsoever. So, well no nightmares so far even after years of regular usage. If your budget doesn't permit spending 8k on the printer, your only option is a second hand purchase.

From my personal experience, I will go with what Sourabh said! EPSON rules in the dot matrix market and they are the best!
