CPU & GPU Heat

I recently bought an MSI X460DX with i5-2430 and 2GB nVidia GT 540M and 6GB RAM. The inbuilt fan is effective and heat is pumped out very effectively.

While gaming I tested the CPU and GPU temperatures.Sample taken while playing Crysis at 1366 x 768 High Settings

Max. CPU temp : 89 Celsius
Max. GPU temp : 85 Celsius

Min. temprature for both is around 48 Celcius

Are these normal/safe values?

When idle the system remains pretty cool.Similar heating is experienced while playing GTA IV.

Please give feedbacks.

BMG ftw!!
Just a bit high.
For laptops, the maximum temperature will remain ~75C, not higher than that.

What is the the max. that a laptop should be operated at?

I haven't checked the minimum tough. The tempratures were attained after about 1-2 hours of playing Crysis.
Will playing at lower settings solve the problem??

I used RealTemp 3.70 to monitor.

BMG ftw!!
Getting external cooler won't solve your problem too much.
And, playing games in a laptop for 1-2 hours is never a good idea.
