Buying 1st time touchscreen phone for my 55 year old dad. Android vs Windows ??? which one is best ?

Hi guys,

My dad is a lawyer and he use to call 2-3 hr daily to their clients and friends. He only use phone for calling and messaging. He is a non techi man, so dont know about any apps or software, current phone is Nokia 225, Nokia 206. But these nokia basic phone are unable to hold 1000 contacts and 500 sms and lags a lot.

So plz help me to decide which OS based touchscreen would be best for him ? ANDROID OR WINDOWS ???

Budget : Rs.6000

I feel windows is easy because of large fonts, easy to swipe and navigate. But i want expert comment on this topic.


By the way, is it worth to buy this phone "Karbonn wind w4" for Rs.4300 after discount code.

Minimum one should aim for Moto E for a first low end android. If camera is preferred, then Redmi 1s. Android one phones can be an option but I don't trust the current OEMs for it (mircomax, karbonn, spice). Any android other than those aren't worth buying in the low budget segment.

First you didn't mentioned the budget and secondly don't buy that phone. You should check out Moto E or check out Lumia 520 in your local store.

Hands down to Windows phone if target are dads. Gaven my dad a Lumia 520 and I think it was a good decision. Not that he won't able to understand all those settings and menu things in Android, but because dad wants a no frill smartphone which just works. And Lumia 520 just works out of the box. Have best camera (since Nokia) and is just easy to use.

Ditto !!! My dad is also dont understand settings. And he never use any apps/ camera nothing at all. Only calling and messaging. I hope windows phone can hold more than 1000 contacts.

Moto E has on screen navigation button which will be confusing for old ppl. And he dont use camera.

I can bet your dad would use his cell phone in bright sunlight & if you'll go by any of those phones mentioned then he'll wish to throw away when reading in sunlight.

I can bet your dad would use his cell phone in bright sunlight & if you'll go by any of those phones mentioned then he'll wish to throw away when reading in sunlight.

The only phone which has made my life easier in bright sunlight is iPhone 4. If set to Auto Brightness, its display automatically brightens up when in bright light conditions.

id recommend three based on preference-
Lumia>Moto>redmi
my personal opinion is that windows is a better choice for a first timer over android any day
my grandad himself uses a Lumia 720 after 2 android handsets which he kept having issues learning
Windows Phone and ios have very simple interfaces and are beautifully optimised etc ,battery life is amazing on windows phone and it handles 5000 contacts with ease(my dad has 5k contacts on his phone-Lumia 720,dont ask why etc )
