The Beetel USB Modem which airtel supplies is faulty:
The driver for the same creates a lot of probs on my computer (winXP SP2) causing BSODs.

this can be solved by requesting the Dlink Ethernet Modem from airtel (this requires a LAN port).
now all my probs are gone and i am basking in the sun.

Yep. I did the same thing a good few months ago, and I am relatively BSOD free. So far had only one BSOD since.

Will there be any difference in speed by changing Beetel USB Modem to Dlink Ethernet Modem ?

I have applied for 256.00kbps speed scheme but i get only 227.00kbps. And the maximum download speed that i get is 16.4 to 17 KB/sec. Iam using Beetel USB Modem. And What is that BSOD ?

There's no speed difference that I am aware of. The advantages are that the driver for dlink is bound to be excellent than the one for the lesser known usb modem brand and there's no driver issue with linux.
If u are getting only upto 17KBps for sites bu having 227kbps connectivity in the last mile, then it's a problem with the site. If even downloads are slow, then something's 'blocking the pipes'. Ask an airtel employee to come over. Maybe you need to change your mtu setting or something.

About BSOD (Blue screens), the usb modem compay is a chep one and hence their drivers do that IRQL thing.

Right off the assembly line
used 2Wire 1800HG with Airtel... full speed... consistent 32KB/s downloads ... i just wonder is it the same airtel connection which used to download at max. 20 KB/s.
