4.7 inchers, select according to your budget...
HTC Desire 526G Plus Dual Sim
LG Optimus LTE2
Intex Aqua Speed HD (2gb ram, kitkat)
Intex Aqua Speed (2gb ram, kitkat)
Xiaomi Redmi 2
Lenovo S660 (3300 mah battery)

there are no good/bang for bucks options in 4.7 inchers.. if you can extend to 5.0 then there are good options like..
Lenovo A6000 Plus
Asus Zenfone 5 (8GB/16GB)

I highly suggest one of the Lumia series
its UI is easier for older people to operate
its faster than most of the other android phones in that price range
camera range is exceptional depending on model
ASS is a breeze compared to the others

If you are more bent on android, get Moto or preferably Asus Zenfone

^^you cannot go wrong with the options I mentioned, their ASS is better than the rest of the phones in that range and so is the vfm factor

Thanks for the info! kkn13 How's Lumia 520? Is it lag free given the 512 mb ram? How's the camera? And Limia 630? As for android, Moto e 2nd gen or Zenfone 5?
SaiyanGoku I don't think mom would be willing to have a mobile more suited for tinkering around with. And I don't believe it has good ASS in lucknow.
anupam_pb Is lenovo a reliable brand? i.e. no major bugs and Customer does not need to make frequent visits to ASS centres?

No.. windows in phones are not that good for basic use also... You can check stock android device for that if you mom does not know anything about android... it is much simple... and don't look for 2-3 year update warranty, because their generation don't like much changes so often and they may find it difficult.. so stock android kitkat is good for your mom..

Lenovo is reliable + has many service centres (I have personally no experience but phones have good build quality n people don't face issues easily)
I suggested A6000+ due to 2GB RAM, which will provide a lag free experience. Lenovo's UI might not be liked by everyone, but hey, its android, so just put a new launcher.....

As far as Windows is concerned, its simple n good, but still boring UI. android is much better OS n its getting better every year

520 is good but old,get a 30-series instead
520 display is a bit bad
530,630,535 etc are good options

dont listen to windows naysayers
androids in this budget arent that great

Well a proper owners experience is always better than just a glance/speculation
as for android getting better and better
I suggest you ask that to the majority of people still stuck on 4.1 or Nexus 5 and 7 owners like me who still have loads of bugs and memory leaks in 5.1 which has made our purchases unusable

1320 is good but 640 is much better for that price
1320 will drop further im sure
