Pls also suggest some laptop other than y50 if you think only a laptop would be good. Also Pls tell whether a laptop would be able to play games on tv at medium settings.

for ~26k you can get 32" Philips series 6 lcd tv which will blow away any laptop screen in terms of viewing experience so decide your priorities first.any ~45-50k laptop will come with a decent graphics card which should be able to handle games(excluding latest/new/old demanding ones) with eye candy options turned off at 1080p but then it they wouldn't look as good on tv.

So whitestar what do you suggest? A laptop with Nvidia 740m or 840m. Which would perform better ??

again depends on your priorities.if you simply like to watch videos by double clicking & using vlc player then get the laptop with more powerful processor but if you do experiment with video processing(or like to do in future) by using avisynth, madvr etc then get the laptop with more powerful graphics card.

My primary purpose is to watch movies with my friends. So I need a fhd/hd screen with highest color reproduction and good viewing angles. I would also like to play games in the next 3 years on the laptop @low or moderate settings. Would that be possible with an Nvidia 740m?? Also does it make much of a difference with fhd and HD ??

it all depends on the quality of videos you are watching.e.g.the so called 720p movies of ~100-120min duration with 1-1.5gb in size will look just like your average videos on 1080p full HD screen.on the other hand the same 720p movies with size ranging from 4.5-5.5gb will look good on full HD screen even if they are not full HD(i.e.720p & not 1080p).to really notice difference between full HD(1080p) & HD(720p) you need a high quality video file(as mentioned before) & a screen 40" or larger in size.

Not an expert, but telling from my experience. A laptop is just stupid for watching movies. You need to have atleast a 32 in full hd tv for a good movie viewing experience. My friend recently purchased a sony fhd 32 in for 30k i think and the picture quality is amazing. Unless you are a videophile, you would be stunned by the picture quality. So yes a lesser priced laptop plus a good tv is a good investment for movies although you might have to make compromises in the gaming dept.

I think that is purely personal preference. I own a 42" Sony 3D LED TV and sometimes I still prefer to watch movies in my laptop.

For me: Family movies - 40" FHD TV
GOT or horror or ahem movies - Laptop

2nd category still needs a decent screen :p

So saying laptop is **** for movies is a bad statement to make!
