I've seen this happen quite a few times with other packages on an odd day. IMO this should either be a temporary error, or you need to fix the issues with the latest pacman major version.

I have some old hard disk drives which are lying idle since my old PC hardware crashed to the point of no recovery. I am considering building a NAS storage from these for my home. Any pointers on how to come up with one with minimal investment on new hardware?

If you are wanting to 'try' linux (e.g. ubuntu), I would advise you install it on a pen drive rather than going for a dual boot at first shot. Try it for a week or so.. see if you like it.. then maybe go for the HDD installation option.
