You probably have virus in your computer. I had the same issue before when I was not doing anything at all. Then I used virus scan and computer was full of virus. But my norton was not able to remove it so I reinstall the computer and it is working really well again.
It is really hard to give you an answer without knowing the PSU. Tell your friend to take a picture of his PSU and it would help a lot with the options we are trying to give.
