SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Yahoo Inc. said Tuesday it is creating a laboratory in Bangalore, India as part of its research and development effort.

The Web portal company named Rajeev Rastogi as vice president and head of the lab. He was the founding director of Bell Labs India.

Yahoo Labs-Bangalore will be responsible for making the Internet more simple and easier for advertisers and users, Yahoo said.

In February, software-maker Microsoft Corp., offered to buy Yahoo for more than $40 billion. Yahoo rebuffed the bid.
