XWindows is the lowest level of abstraction in Unix. Other window managers like MetaCity, GNOME, KDE etc. are based on XWindows and internally use it.

XWindows are at a low level and can directly interact with hardware, so if wanna program with XWindows it is quite difficult as compared to high level toolkits like Xt, Qt etc.

For more info, try google and wikipedia.

In computing, the X Window System (commonly X11 or X) is a windowing system for bitmap displays. It is the standard toolkit and protocol to build graphical user interfaces on Unix, Unix-like operating systems and OpenVMS, and is available for almost all modern operating systems.
