Since the network wld b setup thru the PC wil the secure wifi work if the PC isnt switchd on? btw cld sum1 suggest a good router

Yep, once you set up your wireless network including the security PW and using the router PPPoE and DHCP server, you need not have to have the PC on for accessing the internet through your laptop.(since all the settings are stored in the router)
Further you can setup the DHCP server to dish out only as many LAN IPs as the number of stations. For only the PC and a laptop, for example, you can give the Start IP address as 192.168.x.2 and end IP address as 192.168.x.3 (assuming the IP address of your router is 192.168.x.1).You can further reserve the address for your PC and Laptop or any other station by their MAC(Media Access Control) address. In the Wireless settings you can restrict access to the wireless network to only allow specific PCs based on their MAC addresses. These will ensure that only known PCs and laptops can connect and get an IP address.

Netgear and Linksys have good wireless routers with or without built-in ADSL modem and are the brands you should look-in.

ok it goes here, the router IP will alway be 192.168.1.1, you dont need to set your IP on your own, router will set it for your computer,

You need to set your wireless network once, using your PC or lappy.
I would suggest router with ADSL router if got broadband which can work with it. I have BSNL intenet and have wireless router supplied by BSNL.
Also there was TATA Indicom, I just put the TATA Indicom's wire into the BSNL router and it worked well.
My friend too has got BSNL connection, but he didnt get wireless router, so he bough a DLink one. He says with his wireless router net doesnt works directly, he has to put LAN Cord from the ethernet ADSL router supplied by BSNL into the DLink WL router.

Pictures tell the story more clearly than a thousand words. And here it is amplifying what I have said and is the typical set-up I use for connecting my wired Primary (2 LAN cards),Laptop(wireless), and Mediacenter PC(wireless) using a Netgear DG834Gv3 Wireless ADSL modem router
