What's yr video card/adapter type ?
I think Inter adjusts yr sys settings for optimal quality. find an option for that in prefrences and disable it.

Else use WMP10 or PowerDVD (Free with most drives)

in windvd (both 6 n 7) there is an option to set ur audio to anlogue sound card ... check that option. also there is a test option , use that to see if u hear sound from all ur speakers. u can use the "external pro logic processor" option also if u r onboard sound supports it. test it by changing these settings. the problem is not with windvd but with ur hardware , maybe its too old . also disable extra settings such as "94khz/24 bit decoding" etc. test test and test and see what works for u . another good thing will be to upgrade ur audio and video drivers to the latest available.
