Microsoft has made the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) Release Candidate (RC) available to the public for download.

When compared to previously released updates, SP1 RC contains changes towards addressing specific reliability and performance issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several new technologies, according to Microsoft.

Users can install this near final version via Windows update, and follow the list of instructions provided by the company to avoid problems.

Windows Vista SP1 RC requires pre-installation of two or three updates before installing the service pack itself.

And there are two ways to install the service pack; first, as pop-up notification that SP is ready to be installed, and second, using multiple manual installations from Windows Update.

The first method is the simplest, but may take up to four days for the automatic update feature to deliver each of the three pre-requisite updates as also the the service pack.

In addition, Microsoft has advised users to uninstall previous versions of Vista SP1 before installing SP1 RC, which is valid only till June 30, 2008.

Windows Vista SP1 RC is available to all machines running on any of the 36 languages supported by Vista RTM (released to manufacturing).
