Apple Computerhas just announced to customers who use the Windows version of itsiTunes software to not upgrading to Windows Vista until it can releasea patch to fix a number of serious compatibility issues.

One of these can cause serious corruption to the iPod.

Some currently known compatibility issues with iTunes 7.0.2 and earlier versions include:

iTunes Store purchases may not play when upgrading to Windows Vista from Windows 2000 or XP.
iPod models with the "Enable Disk Use" option turned off may beunable to update or restore iPod software, and make changes to iPodsettings.
iPod models configured to Auto Sync and have the "Enable DiskUse" option turned off may require being ejected and reconnected toresync.
Ejecting an iPod from the Windows System Tray using the "SafelyRemove Hardware" feature may corrupt your iPod. To always safely ejectan iPod, choose Eject iPod from the Controls menu within iTunes.
Cover Flow animation may be slower than expected.
Contacts and calendars will not sync with iPod.

iPod models with the "Enable Disk Use" option turned off may beunable to update or restore iPod software, and make changes to iPodsettings.

This shows that Vista will Corrupt your iPod!

But comon, i have synced iPod nano here with Itunes in Vista, no problems what so ever.

I wonder. why is apple saying not to upgrade to Vista "OS". I mean, weather the users wants to upgrade their OS or not depends on him, but giving such a stupid reason.....gr8, only Apple can think of it.

if an app breaks the iPod, it's the fault of iTunes, shouldn't they be saying "Do not install itunes on Vista, use something else" insted of saying "Do not upgrade to Vista" :D

The headline is misleading. As of now iTunes is not completely compatible with Vista. Apple says that they will make the updated version in weeks of time. This incompatibility of iTunes is bound to create problems in iPod too. So it's the problem of iTunes and not Vista.

iTunes 7.0.2 may work with Windows Vista on many typical PCs. Apple recommends, however, that customers wait to upgrade Windows until after the next release of iTunes which will be available in the next few weeks. This document will be updated as more information becomes available.

If you are upgrading to Windows Vista or have purchased a new computer with Windows Vista pre-installed, here is some information you may find helpful:

Compatibility with Windows Vista

Apple is preparing to address a number of iTunes compatibility issues in the next release of the software.

Some currently known compatibility issues with iTunes 7.0.2 and earlier versions include:
  • iTunes Store purchases may not play when upgrading to Windows Vista from Windows 2000 or XP.
  • iPod models with the "Enable Disk Use" option turned off may be unable to update or restore iPod software, and make changes to iPod settings.
  • iPod models configured to Auto Sync and have the "Enable Disk Use" option turned off may require being ejected and reconnected to resync.

Upgrading to Windows Vista

  1. Deauthorize all iTunes Store accounts.
  2. Enable Disk Use on all iPod models.
  3. Uninstall iTunes.
  4. Perform a clean install of Windows Vista (Highly recommended but not required).
  5. Reinstall the latest version of iTunes.
  6. Open iTunes.
  7. Choose Authorize Computer from the Store menu in iTunes.
Customers who have upgraded to Windows Vista and are still experiencing issues playing iTunes Store purchases should download and run the iTunes Repair Tool for Vista after re-installing iTunes 7.0.2. Click here for more information about this tool.

It's not about them saying "Windows Vista curropts iPod", it is about them saying "Do not use Vista, if u have an iPod".

What the user uses as the OS is his choice. Apple knows that iPod has a large market share, out of which, 90% are Windows users, so by coming up with stetement like these they can easily blame MS for their own flaws. Remember the case of iPods with Windows virus in it, they did not accepted their mistake, they said, it's a the flaw of Windows that it is not secure, not the flaw of Apple to bundle iPods with Virus

LOL. The Apple v/s Microsoft battle really becomes funny when one of them pulls a sly trick, such as this, on the other. Nice one by Apple. Purposely make windows users wait to upgrade to Vista till Apple takes their own sweet time fixing iTunes, just so that it'll not 'corrupt' their iPods. What'll they think of next?:D

Apple is just advising their users to delay upgrading to Vista till they launch a newer fully-compatible version of iTunes and it is going to come very soon. They are not blaming Microsoft.

In the iPod case, almost every Apple fan believes it was a stupid move on the company's part to blame Windows for being susceptible to viruses when it was clearly the fault of their manufacturing department. But they did not put the entire blame on Windows, as you seem to be suggesting. They did apologise for their mistake.

Please don't start an argument now! :)

Exactly!
Apple should not say to users to delay upgrading to Vista. That is a deceptive statement. Infact they should say that "Don't use present version of iTunes ,till the compatible version is released. It is Apple's responsibility to make it compatible to Vista. No one would like to stop upgrading to Vista just for iTunes Issue. After all there are many 'other' things people do using Vista, than connecting iPod and using iTunes alone! :D

One application is often reason enough to stop people from switching from Windows to Linux or Mac.
Similarly, something as severe as the chance of corrupting their iPod can easily make people wait a few days to upgrade to Vista. It is just Apple's advice. You are free to ignore it and risk losing your iPod.
You don't know how crazy some people can be about iTunes, iPod and their song collection. Telling such a person to avoid using iTunes for a week is disaster for him. Ultimately, the decision rests with you. You have to decide which is more important - Windows Vista or your iPod. :)

Ultimately, the decision rests with you. You have to decide which is more important - Windows Vista or your iPod

could be specific to a few ipods or a few configurations. i synced a nano in Vista with Latest iTunes, & there was no problem
