Why Telephone is Called Dead when not working

Can Anyone answer why telephone when out of order is called Dead,while all other electronic or electrical instrument like radio,television and fridge etc are Alive even when not working.

Because only telephones hv dial-tones and not others.
Dial-tone is just like the heart beat and when there is no dial-tone (i.e. no heart beat), the phone is considered as dead.

How can an inanimate object like telephone lie Dead?Death occur to animals only!please explain!
