So far they have been characters taken from the movie "Toy Story" by Pixar.

buzz (Buzz Lightyear) was the spaceman,
    rex was the tyrannosaurus,
bo (Bo Peep) was the girl who took care of the sheep,
    hamm was the piggy bank,
slink (Slinky Dog (R)) was the toy dog,
potato was, of course, Mr. Potato (R),
    woody was the cowboy,
sarge was the sergeant of the Green Plastic Army Men,
etch was the toy blackboard (Etch-a-Sketch (R)).
sid was the boy next door who destroyed toys.

    I saw this at http://www.us.debian.org/doc/FAQ/ch-ftparchives.html#s-sourceforcodenames

I was wondering why they named it that way until I came across the above.. :)

Yeah these companies come out with such names for their releases that they appear funny until you know how they came about.
Another such company is our favourite MS, who comes out with names of obscure places for codenames of their OSes.

Arey, Chembur is just the code name. Finally when they release it to public, they'll rename it to Microsoft © Windows ® Larine Mines ™ 2010 OS

Btw, there's an interesting list maintained by Debian's Joey about the host naming scheme for Debian's servers.
    http://people.debian.org/~joey/misc/naming.html

There's even a server called Samosa which is used by debian project internally.

Thanks but no I'd rather have Larine Mines Linux. rather than Windows Larine Mines.
