What is the use of pagefile.sys in Windows XP???

Hello friends!

I am having a P4 with Win XP as the OS. In the root directory, there is a system file called "pagefile.sys". Can anyone tell me what is this file and is this created everytime I start my computer. Actually I want to take a complete backup of my system along with the OS. Do I need to take a backup of this file also? Is it safe to delete this file???

this file is created for virtual memory. it is safe to make a backup without this file.

push CTRL+F in ur browser and type pagefile.sys to know which part of the site has info about it.

Pls someone explain how can i create a swap partition for windows XP?it normally was created under C partn.thats why.also if i need the immediate near partition for swap....
