Ping is a test to see how much time it takes to communicate between your computer and another computer on a network... Depending on the cable speed, bandwidth available, etc, your time taken to communicate may vary a bit... The ping time is also called "latency"... The lower your latency is with a particular server, the faster you can access files in it... This is important in online gaming, etc...

Is the bandwidth and the speed of a 64kbps modem enough to play games like fifa 98 or any FPS game???

Depends where the server is located.

ping is a command to see wheather the remote computer is alive or not. It has the general format- ping ip/comp name. It sends a 32byte dummy packet
and waits for the acknowledgement.Every packet has a time to live(TTL)which is usually 128ms. After sending 4 successful consecutive packets, it shows the final statistics(% loss, number of packets send-received etc). you can alternatively use tracert command.

Ping is a command to check whether the computer can connect to the remote
computer. For eg., Open DOS console and type : ping www.yahoo.com
It will tell the IP address of Yahoo , how many bytes received , time taken (in milli secs).
Originally the Unix Systems had ping facility. When Windows was developed they copied
the thing to Windows!! Yahoo's IP address is 209.73.186.238. OPen the browser and
type *209.73.186.238 .It should open the Yahoo web page!!
