I have a Vantec eSATA external HDD case ... pics of case and cable...

I get data transfer rates of around 62MB/s with a HDD in this case as against 33MB/s with the same HDD in a USB2 case.

What is really good about eSATA besides faster data transfer rates is the negligible CPU utilization. eSATA should be made a standard not only in desktops but also in notebooks. Hard drive capacities on notebooks are not even close to the desktop counterparts. Even in year 2007, hdd manufacturers only promise capacities like 160-200GB max on 2.5" platter size. eSATA should really be a nice option.

Yes I am aware of it

Vantec Nexstar itself have a PCMCIA solution for it. Express card solutions would even be better. But I wanted to suggest that having it as a standard port in a notebook would be worth looking at as an option.

I did not get a eSATA card but a cable and bracket which connects to a regular SATA connector on the mother board .... here is a picture

The eSATA Vantec case cost me 3.5k I use a Hitachi 7K160 series 160GB single platter HDD (HDD cost around 2.7K) in this case as it it the coolest running HDD I could find. HDDs in external cases get quite hot - one HDD in the eSATA case was formatting at 63C !!
