In Vista, the two icons do not blink as they did in XP according to the Data flow. Rather, if you are connected to the web, there will be a small globe icon and if you turn on the animation, alternatively, irrespective of the data flow, each of the comps will blink once. To enable animation, right click on the icon and select turn on animation.

If, inspite of being connected to the internet, you see the red cross along with the two icons, one of the network services is stopped. Open services and enable the network services.

1. Right click on taskbar and select "Properties".
2. Goto "Notification Area" tab.
3. Enable "Network" in "System icons" section.
4. Apply it. :)
