View hidden files error !!

I have a problem with viewing hidden files. when i try to activate view hidden files from folder options menu and it does not shows any hidden files nor gives any error msg when i click apply / ok. it reverts back to its original position of "do not show hidden files and folders" automatically after clicking OK. checked for virus with no result.

I use windows xp prof with sp2, avg 7.5 anti virus. wht might be the problem ?
