Sajeeth Cherian (is this guy of Indian origin?), a Canadian graduate student, who's the brains behind Videora, the tool that merges BitTorrent and RSS, has come up with another killer app - PSP Video 9. In simple terms, it works this way. The UMD media format is pretty restrictive when it comes to video/DVD on the PSP and you have to shell out more money to buy yourself a UMD movie, even if you own the DVD. The PSP Video 9 allows users to sync their PC to their PSP, transfer video to it on the fly and use video on the go. The software can convert MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and AVI to the PSP format for use on the UMD. Synced with Videora, it can automatically download videos from the BitTorrent network and sync it to the PSP with little intervention from the user. The software has already been downloaded over 10,000 times in Japan and people are using this to create clips for the PSP format and put it up for download through BitTorrent. And what's the major application that people see using this technology, called PSPcasting, for? Mobile porn. The PSP just became the PornStation Portable. When Wired News' Regina Lynn asked Cherian whether he thought PSP Video 9 was a killer app for mobile porn, and he sounded genuinely surprised. "All it does is let you take video and put it on your PSP. If (porn is) what people are really looking for, I guess it could be," he says. "But the PSP only just came out (in North America) on Thursday. It's kind of hard to do a 'killer app' without the device being out." Well, its been two days since the PSP has been out in the US. Let's see where this goes. Talk about a digital culture gone haywire!

Intresting! Made me wonder why can't we have a PSP Emulator then? And guess what? I found one! OK, not really found one...but found out that one indeed exists!
See it here!

OMG, that is just awesome, running games at full speed on the emulator. Also, did you take a look at the PSP-Roms sister site? It looks like some people are already at work on a mod chip for the PSP. It remains to be seen what will happen to the UMD media. Since its anything but universal, will it go the way of the GBA ROM cartridges and be pirated en masse or will Sony actually succeed in holding off the pirates. But about that SDK thats also a emulator, if that were the case, then it looks like a cracker can very well use the SDK as a reverse engineering solution and end up ripping the game and, along with the mod chip, end up circumventing the so-called rigorous anti-piracy measures of the PSP. And with software like Videora, its only a matter of time before the $30 UMD DVD movies are pirated and DivX/xviD rips are ported onto UMDs and shipped at ridiculous prices. It looks like watching LOTR and playing NFSU:Rivals on a pirated UMD will gain more popularity than porn-on-the-go. I also wonder if it would be just a matter of time before rewritable UMDs or something along those lines hit the market, transforming the PSP completely. We will know a lot more 'twisted' applications for the PSP by the end of 2005, as more and more people gain access to the handheld and the SDK.
