Hey all

Upgrading after a long time.. so here's what I am thinking..

Asus A8V Deluxe: Rs. 8,700
Athlon 64 3000+ (Socket-939): Rs. 7,900
Transcend 512 MB DDR-400: Rs. 2950
Seagate SATA 160 GB: Rs. 4,750
16X DVD-Writer with Dual Layer Burning: Rs. 4,800
Sound Card: Creative SB Live! 24-bit Sound card (Rs. 2,450)
Speakers: Creative Inspire 6600 Speakers (Rs. 4,900)
A proper cabinet ( MOST IMP AS HEATING IS A HECK OF A PROBLEM FOR ME ).. COMP ON 24 X 7

Prices are estimate.. plz do quote the proper price if u know ( in Mumbai )

Things to keep in note are

1) I have a AGP card so i dont need 1.. but I need a mobo with AGP Slot..

2) Already have a 512 chip so additional 512MB will make it 1 GB for me..

3) Need to future proof it a bit ( not PCI-e ) but in system stability wise..

What u guys say ??

Speedy suggestions and mumbai prices needed..

or perhaps P4 ?? ( i know 99% ppl hate intel here )

Nice config. The DVD writer which make is it ? The benq one is Rs 4500. Proper cabinet would then be from Zebronics lava lava. Still a damn good cabinet. Ofcourse if you can afford it then Antec ;) If you cvant go for a Antec smps then powersafe is you best bet 400W is more than enough. The rest looks pretty cool mate.

Lot of people upgrading ! gr8 !
Your prices are mostly spot on khandu, the A8V shud b down to 8-8.2k though. IF u can afford then go for the 3200+ which is like 1.5k more i think and a gr8 ocer. A good cabinet would be a one with lot of fans, if u an antec get the SLK1650 which is the cheapest one with 350W PSU for arnd 3k. Getting a generic cabby with a powersafe 400W psu will cost u as much so y not get the 1650 instead.

Hmm...man u save 500rs. and remember u will have to pay additional for the firmware upgrade (i think it's only rs. 90 or so.., my friend got it done). So in whatever way u will save money. Also check the writing speed of 1600 before buying.

@khandu: The A8V is the best agp based s939 mobo, not a extreme oc'er but some guys have managed to oc their 3000+ winnies to 2.7Ghz which is awesome !

I also have a Benq 1600 flashed to 1620 ! So you can save the money since a simple firmware flash turns the 1600 > 1620 without losing your warranty !

@grudge: 90/-rs for wot ?? Firware upgrade is easy as saying 1 ..2...3. Benq ppl have provided a windows based flash utility to flash their drives to newer updates. Needless to say your frnd got ripped.

What did u mean by this.. my prev comp is 2.8GHZ HT.

So 3000+ is slower than that ???

@blade, wht's the big deal in rs. 90 man? That fellow took one full day to flash that drive....

khandu...yes the 3000+ is slower in terms of clock speeds but out does the 2.8 ghz HT hands down. Not even a fair comparison actually. Cos one is 64 bit and the other is 32 bit.

Hm...
120Gb/7200 RPM sata costs Rs 4000.
Rs. 7000, 250gb, 7200 RPM.

One more thing:
Samsung --> chances of getting bad sectors
Seagate --> Noisy drive (but for higher capacity HDD only)

In my opinion Maxtor is good. I have ordered a 400gb Maxtor diamond plus which will cost rs. 5.5k . Already my sousin has a 250gb HDD of maxtor which costed 4.3k. It's some 6 months old and doing well...

@Khandu: I htought u might have had an idea that AMD uses pr ratings for its processors rather than clock speeds. Though AMD processors outperform any Intel proccys of the same ratings and more.

OMG ! grudge who said samsung has more chances of bad sectors !It all depends on the conditions and usage.I have been using samsung drives for quite some time now. No probs till date. Though seagates are fractionally better in performance. Maxtors drives are also good though they come with 3yr warranty only imo.
