Unreal Tournament (UT) III Linux Server is finally available and the good news is that you don't need a retail copy of UT3 to host games.

The server comes as a complete package – a pretty large one, I may add – of 1.6 GB. After you download it, you must set the file as executable, and run it like an ordinary program. Although, you must have a Gamespy login to use the server. If you don't have one, you can create a free account quick and easy.

When you get the package, there are two ways to make it executable. The easy
way is to right click on the package and go to Properties -> Permissions. Check the "Execute" box, which will allow you to run the program. Or, if you are a console geek, open up a terminal and change to the directory where you downloaded the file. After you do this, type in the console:
Code:
chmod a+x UT3-linux-server-12172007.bin

and you will have the same results as in the easy way. After you make the UT III Server executable, run it. The application will unpack itself and the installation will begin.

UT 3 is a sequel of Unreal Tournament 2004, created by Epic Games, also known as Epic and formerly as Epic MegaGames, a computer game development company based in Cary, North Carolina, United States. Unreal Tournament was first released in 1998, and enjoyed a lot of popularity among gamers. It's main competitor at that time was Quake 3: Arena, a game produced by ID Software. Along with the game, Epic offered along a scripting language, specially designed for offering to the public the possibility to add modifications and enhancements to the game.

UT 3 has versions for all major operating systems and game consoles, like Mac OS, Linux, Windows, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The idea to offer versions of the game for the forementioned OSes belongs to Mark Rein, Epic's Vice-President, who said that the game experience would not differ on any of these platforms, so everyone could fully enjoy Unreal Tournament.
