Yahoo begins offering unlimited storage size for its mail solution today in a move meant to bring the product in the spotlights and beat Google's Gmail. Although the Sunnyvale company didn't mention any certain date for the big release, Google Watch sustained that Yahoo starts the upgrading process today; however, all the users will receive the unlimited capacity in the upcoming months. Yahoo first announced the decision in March, when the company made an interesting analysis of the Mail's evolution.

"We’re psyched to be breaking new ground in the digital
storage frontier by giving our users the freedom to never worry about deleting old messages again. And, like any responsible webmail service, we have anti-abuse limits in place to protect our users. BTW: As much as we’d like to just flip a switch and "unlimit" everyone on the same day, we’ll be rolling this out over a few months to facilitate a smooth transition — we know there’s virtually nothing more precious than your inbox," Yahoo said on March 23.

It all started in 1997 when Yahoo Mail was launched with a 4MB storage size and upgraded after no more than 7 years to 100MB. After only one year, Yahoo Mail received a new improvement, its capacity being increased to 1GB. This year, the giant portal announced the unlimited storage size that caused some trouble for the Yahoo rivals. For example, the Mountain View company Google tried to reply to this move and sustained that Gmail will offer soon even more than unlimited capacity because they intend to upgrade it with infinity plus one MB of storage size.

As far I can see, Yahoo Mail is still offering only 1GB of storage size, but I guess I'm not among the first lucky users to receive unlimited capacity. At this time, Yahoo Mail is available in 2 flavors: the classic interface with basic features and a beta version that brings improved functionality for the mail solution.

Gmail is already proving 2GB+ space, Hotmail is also providing 2 GB space, Rediffmail has already announce unlimited space. So its too late for yahoo! to announce unlimited space as lots of users has left using it since many days bcoz of its space, look, slow speed and no FREE POP Access & forwarding. ;)
