I have compaq presario laptop. My HDD is 160gb out of which C has vista installed. I have kept 15gb free space to install ubuntu.

Today i have tried to intall ubuntu 7.10.
When I put the CD into the drive it gives my the Ubuntu LiveCD Boot screen. Asking what I'd like to do.
It starts to boot, looks to be loading some drivers and then it gives about 4 or 5 errors that go by to fast to read.
Continues loading some more drivers then it gives another couple of errors.
Now I'm new to Linux and dont know what does this mean

Anyone have any ideas whats going wrong here?
Please help me.

The error message is as follows:
[97.380000] bcm43xx : Error : Microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed.
[97.424000} bcm43xx : Error : Microcode "bcm43_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed.

^one line answer is:
if u have the BW to download, then get ubuntu gutsy alternate cd;also is that laptop amd64 or intel one?if amd,go for ubuntu alternate_amd64 one.

Resistance is Futile.
bcm: Indicates Broadcom NIC/WiFi, maybe Ubuntu cant find the drivers required?

Post your dmesg contents here.
To do that open terminal and type
Code:
dmesg > ~/bootup.txt

Next open your filemanager goto home folder and paste the contents of bootup.txt file here.

PS: I think you can ignore the bcm error

( a better way to filter out only those causing errors,
Code:
dmesg | grep err > ~/bootup.txt

@maddy:the possible solution is to use ubuntu gutsy gibbon 7.10 alternate cd_x64 for ur amd laptop.the text based debian installer allows the installation to complete and give option to leave the networking part(that error shown!) for configuration later after installation.

It is not worth the pain to trouble shoot the GUI Ubiquity installer which fails many times!I hope this is ur needed answer.

^^^ PLz use a bigger image. Can't make out anything. To get admin privileges prexif the command with "su" (without quotes, obviously).

@maddy:
Firstly, what do u wanna mount? did u followed *ubuntuguide.org for possible doubts clearing?

use "sudo" before the command.dont use ROOT's(admin) account in any distro.
so,for mounting a partition,we do,
Code:
sudo /dev/sda5 /mnt
and ur screenshot shows ur doing as local user and weird,ur mounting something NOT in /dev/ directory

also, juste select the terminal output with ur left mouse button pressed and copy and paste here in forums under wrapper "code"
DONT POST TERMINAL O/P AS SCREENSHOTS!

While it is possible to set an admin password and login as root; its not recommended. So for the moment till you are comfortable with the OS and its internals use "sudo" :)
