Hello guys,

This is the way I changed my desktop background to a video instead of boring pictures

HISTORY
Few months back our neighbor brought a new computer. They don’t know much about computer so they called me. I am a Civil Engineer student but I know much about computers. Thanks to DIGIT. I also surprise my friends sometime with my knowledge about computers. So my neighbor once asked me can he change the desktop background to a VIDEO instead of a picture or wallpaper. Initially I said I don’t know and it is not possible. I know about softwares that changes wallpapers at a regular intervals of time. I don’t know anything about softwres which can do that. Since I don’t have internet connection at home, cyber café is the only way to surf the net. I usually forget about it while surfing.

One day I installed winDVD 5 Platinum edition. I found in the display option video desktop mode. It didn’t work with avi files. But it works with mpeg videos. So it is possible to apply video to desktop background. I already applied animated wallpapers to desktop. It is nothing but .html files or web pages. Since windows desktop background allows html files, if you create an html page that has video in it can be easily applied as desktop backgrounds.

HOW TO DO?
Creating an html page with video is very very simple. The software you need for this is Microsoft Office with FrontPage. I think most of us have it, original or pirated. So open it. In new page go to menu Insert->picture->video Select any video you like which your computer can play. Your video is inserted at the top left corner. Click on it and drag to resize it to any direction. Don’t worry about the size of video in the page. Go to HTML mode from normal found at the bottom. Go to the line which shows location of your video file. In that line you will also find Width and Height values that you set by dragging the video. Simply change those values to 1024 and 768. Here 1024 and 768 are the resolution of your screen. If the resolution is different for your computer then change those values accordingly. Now go to menu Format->Properties. Here we can change the way how video will be played. Change the value of loop depending on how many times you want the video to be played. Click on forever if you want the video to be looped forever. You can also change the delay between Loops.

Now save the page with the name you want. If you want you can change the color of the background of the page. Go to normal mode, in the format menu choose background and change it to black from automatic. Since a small background border will appear around video in desktop. Black color will easily blend with video. Save the file and open desktop properties. I think you know how to open that. Go to desktop click browse and choose HTML in the files of type and select your html file you created. Click on apply; wait for a moment and your video starts playing in the background. Your friends will be surprised when you show this. Same thing happened with my friends, they couldn’t believe it. Since it is a desktop background it will start every time you start your computer. You can also apply a horror movie scene to scare the people while starting your computer. It is really fun to do that. It’s your creativity from now onwards.

DISADVANTAGES

Once you apply video wherever you right click the video on desktop you will see the options of internet explorer such as save video etc. So to go to desktop properties you have to right click at the sides of video which is black (at borders) and select properties and change the desktop background to wallpaper
However this will use considerable amount of computer memory and delay the startup time of your computer. While playing the game or listening music or watching videos you have to turn off this or change the background to an image. You can also right click on video and click stop and play to resume.
If you have windows Xp running on 128 MB Ram don’t do this. Your applications will be slowed down and working will be difficult. So you require minimum of 256MB Ram.
While shutting down windows gives error message, but don't worry it shuts down Properly.
You can use WinDVD 5 Platinum edition instead of using this method. But you will not be able set video at startup. So you have to play a video using winDVD and choose video desktop from display options. But you can turn this off whenever you want. I don’t know any other software like this. If anybody knows, please reply to this topic.

So this thing is for those who want to show off there computer to others. It looks good if you use movie trailers and video should be of good quality. If you want to use number of videos then you have to combine it first.
If you think all these are cumbersome and irritating then you are better off with GIF animations which can be used as desktop background.
If anybody has comments and questions or has better ideas on this please reply or email me. This is second post by me to DIGIT forum. So I don’t know if anybody knows this already or posted.

Have a nice day

Do you know that your system will crawl after doing that.
Infact even active desktop consumes a lot of memory n video on ur active desktop.....
Unless you have looots of Ram to spare.

I have 512MB RAM with 64MB Geforece graphics still i won't favour ur trick tht will still make my system work very very slowly & if U wanna see the impact try UNDERGROUND at high resolution with full graphics if ur PC has enough ability to produce graphics of tht standard......... plzz tell me after a game play either U enjoyed it or not ....

For fun & trick sort of thing it's a nice way to do it but i knew it earlier so i can't appreciate much still u did it well!!!
