I would like to ask whether,
- A 256 MB graphics card offers better performance than a 128MB, is it worth shelling an extra 2.5 grands on it?
- Which do you think is the best deal among the following?
- Radeon 9600 128MB - 6,500 Rs
- Radeon 9600 256MB - 9,000 Rs
- Geforce 5700 128MB - 7,000 Rs
- Geforce 5700 256 MB - 8,500 Rs

Personally, Im looking at a Radeon 256MB for 9,000 bucks. I'm ready to shell out the extra 2,500 Rs. if it offers far better performance than a 128 MB one and also considering the fact that I wanna play Doom 3 at a good resolution with a pretty good frame rate, and the card should also be future ready as I'm not gonna upgrade it for atleast 7 years!
Please help,
Thank You.

7 years, for get it, no card is gonna last that long, get a PS2 if U want only game

I would recomend a FX5700 with 256 MB RAM, the chip will last for about 2 years, & the memory will last longer, 128 MB is enough, but if U gave money then get 256 MB RAM

GeForce are the cards to play Doom3, it sux on Radeon

oh! I can smell ANIDEX coming and starting again, the War

With those options and ur willingness to spend 9k, i'd suggest that u go for a Club3d 9600XT for 10.3k or a Gigabyte 9600XT for 11k. Although the extra 256Mb isnt of much use on the 9600 or the 9800 series, the 6800 series benefits frm it.

those card will only last for 1 and a half year max ......as soon as 6600 and 6800 get popular these will be discontinued ....same is with X800 or X600 series

256 mb for all the above cards are waste as the memory is used to store mainly textures and the these processor are not fast enough to process that huge data so fast ....so if u see any performance difference ...between 128 mb and 256 mb versions(which is not more than mere 5-10 fps)..... that can be achived by overclocking ur 128 mb card.....so i would suggest to go for better GPU's ......put ur money in better GPU ....how much is fx5900 ...i think its around 10k XFX version ...(i m really amazed that there are not much 9800pro 128 mb in the market...as this is the best card to buy in this category) ......... i think its oky that u don't get goodies(but their performance is really good) ....but just on name of godies u cann't sacrifice performance......if u want games u can always buy it ....

then again if u want to choose from either of two 9600 xt is better performance wise but as u say u want to play doom3 nvidia cards are best ....(though this applies specifically to gefroce 6XXX series....but clearly the 5700 ultra beats 9600xt in both plain and AA+AIF mode,
proof:-
1) plain *www.digit-life.com/articles2/digest3d/0804/itogi-video-d3-wxp.html
2) goodies on
*www.digit-life.com/articles2/digest3d/0804/itogi-video-d3-wxp-aaa.html)...otherwise

nvidia is best in driver support and u will not face any driver problem whatsoever if it is not game specific! :)

now there is word of caution there are many flavours available :
9600 xt,pro and 5700 ultra,LE......the diffrence is the the frequency of the GPU clock and frequency of RAM Used ...so when we are comparing
following are supposed to competing pairs
9600,->5700
9600 pro -> 5700 LE
9600 XT -> 5700 ultra.

for more of the detailed bechmarks go to :-

make ur choise wisely.!!!!!!!

Get the 9600XT or 9600 Pro. Nvidia's previous generation of cards (5000 series) was pure sh!t. Look at 3DMark05, the FX series cringes because of extremely poor shader performance. Even a 9600 Pro outscores a 5900XT by a large margin. :lol:

Geforce

Journeyman
IF you looking for a card below 10k i think you should idealy go for 9600 Pro or 9600 XT 128MB cards.

256MB is waste, and if you think that it is possible to live with it for 7 years !! -- take my word 2-2.5 years MAX.

Plain versions of both NVidia and ATI ie. GeforceFX 5700(also 5600) and ATI RADEON 9600 are shy of some of the power required to run PS 2.0 so i would not recommend them for their price.
