How do you like your hot coffee? If you're Jack Thompson, you like it scalding game publisher's laps. The Miami attorney and antigaming activist has done his share to see that games don't fall into the wrong hands. And lately, those hands have belonged to almost everyone.

Thompson was among those who spearheaded the recent effort to slap an "Adults Only" rating on Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and he's often been on the forefront of many other gaming issues, several of which have targeted the crime-spree-based GTA franchise. In the past, he's represented defendants who have been the victims of GTA-inspired crimes, including the triple homicide of three police officers by an 18-year-old boy in Alabama.

His beef with San Andreas? Unused code in the game that depicts sexual acts. These minigames can be unlocked by using game-cheat devices or patches available on the Internet.

Thompson is on a roll...and he's not done yet. His latest goat is a game that doesn't involve guns, carjacking, or prostitutes: He's going after Electronic Arts' The Sims 2.

In a manifesto sent today to press outlets, Thompson focuses on dismantling the Entertainment Software Ratings Board and exposing what he calls the industry's "latest dirty little secret." The secret's out now, and it involves nude sims.

In the statement, Thompson says, "Sims 2, the latest version of the Sims video game franchise ... contains, according to video game news sites, full frontal nudity, including nipples, penises, labia, and pubic hair."

The Sims 2 is a "life simulator." In the game, players steer their digital beings around their cyberlives. Actions include everything from the spectacular (getting married, having children, receiving promotions at work) to the mundane (cooking microwaved meals, going to the bathroom, mopping the floor). Such activities, as in real life, sometimes require nudity. EA circumvents inappropriateness by "blurring" out the nether regions, almost to a comical sense.

Knowing that the game is popular among all ages, EA has even taken steps to ensure that Sims fans aren't exposed to indecent depictions. In the recent expansion pack, The Sims 2 University, gamers can send their teenage sims off to college. However, instead of packing the expansion with "keggers" and "reefer," EA chose to use juice and bubble blowers.

Thompson doesn't seem to care. He cites a cheat code that can remove the blur that covers the nether regions. "The nudity placed there by the publisher/maker, Electronic Arts, is accessed by the use of a simple code that removes what is called 'the blur' which obscures the genital areas. In other words, the game was released to the public by the manufacturer knowing that the full frontal nudity was resident on the game and would be accessed by use of a simple code widely provided on the Internet."

It's not just the adults that are liberated from their wardrobes. Sims kids can also be nudified, "much to the delight, one can be sure, of pedophiles around the globe who can rehearse, in virtual reality, for their abuse."

Were this to be true, Thompson would have his smoking gun, and EA would be forced to recall all copies of The Sims 2. However, it's what's under the blur that Thompson's after. And what happens when the blur is lifted? A simple mannequin-esque smooth body, according to EA.

Jeff Brown, vice president of corporate communications at EA, in response to the accusations, told GameSpot, "This is nonsense. We've reviewed 100 percent of the content. There is no content inappropriate for a teen audience. Players never see a nude sim. If someone with an extreme amount of expertise and time were to remove the pixels, they would see that the sims have no genitals. They appear like Ken and Barbie."

Thompson doesn't buy it. "The sex and the nudity are in the game. That's the point. The blur is an admission that even the 'Ken and Barbie' features should not be displayed. The blur can be disarmed. This is no different than what is in San Andreas, although worse."

[UPDATE] Thompson this afternoon updated his earlier statement, saying he is aware certain mods only remove "the blur," but adds that "Electronic Arts has done nothing about this." Thompson's new conclusion: EA is "cooperating, gleefully, with the mod community to turn Sims 2 into a porn offering."

The last time we checked, The Sims 2 was rated T for Teen by the ESRB, which means that anyone 13 years of age, with $50 to spend, can purchase the game.

Read it last night on Gamespot and was laughing for a whole minute. OK, Hot Coffee was not really a good thing to have happened but Sims? Gimme a break! This guy thinks he can do anything now!

Companies can't help it if someone decides to mod their product and add adult content.
If someone decides to put up a mod that makes all the players in FIFA naked, are they going to make it an Adult Only game?

Good point drvarunmehta :D

I remember seeing nude skins for Quake 3 up for downloading too. Does that make Q3 AO? Gimme a break!!!

Hot Coffee was serious. But not The Sims!!

But this is different from applying a user-defined patch.
In Quake, if I can say
/MOFOS_NUDE=1
to turn on nude player skins, then it is bad(linke in sims). But if it requires user created map/patch then the situation is more "tame" (like in gta). This, I gather, is what the article trying to say.

Come on! What do you expect from a life simulator like Sims to do? Show people having a bath suited in a three piece suit?

In any case, Sims uses those blurred patches to hide the nudity. You need to download a patch to to remove those censor patches.

That's the point! You don't need a patch to disable nudity; just a cheat code will do. Atleast, that's what I saw online.
This is the cheat:
Code:
No censor; set to 8 to return to normal ==>	intprop censorgridsize 0

Hmmm...didn't knew that. I thought all along that you have to apply a patch before you can see whats behind the blur. Even then, I think an AO for Sims will be stretching the things a bit too far.

IMO, the guy just hates gaes, first he started the GTA:SA Controversy then this, heard it on GameSpot, he's one of those rare people who don't like games. Imbecile!

If this is to happen then what will happen to all those games who are real life character driven. One day he will say HL2 characters can be made nude.

The true spirit of playing games will be hampered like this. The guy should be stopped or the games should be such that nobody can apply mods like these.

the Guy is Nuts, he's just some lame loser, who knows, maybe his next statement would be: "mario bros' has too much nudity and is not suitable for kids  he is just trying to end Gaming! even when you enable the cheat, you won't see any inappropriate parts of SIMS being displayed, and just like cody said sim is a life simulator. i have no idea why he is after the SIMS, dammit, he should be after Games Like: playboy: the Mansion, singles: Flirt up your life, leisure Suit larry, not the SIMS :D

Here's another version of the article posted above. This one details on Mr.Thomson's history of attitude problems. Just how stupid is this guy, really?

Pouring Hot Coffee On The Videogame Industry While It's Down

It seems that whenever controversy hits the gaming industry, Miami attorney Jack Thompson is either leading it, or not too far behind. The man is infamous for his scathing attacks on the gaming industry, both in the media and the court room, not to mention his personal attacks on those who disagree with his positions.

During his career, he has been asked to submit to psychiatric testing by the Florida Supreme Court, while undergoing a bizarre First Amendment campaign. He made some accusations against Janet Reno after losing his bid to become Dade County State Attorney. But let's not get into that.

In recent years, however, Mr. Thompson's work has mainly been in the area of the videogame industry. He has tried pinning events such as the 1997 Paducah and 1999 Columbine school shootings on videogames. (The 1997 shootings were dismissed by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.)

He has also launched a series of personal attacks aimed at the head of the Entertainment Software Association, Doug Lowenstein, comparing him first to Joseph Goebbels and then Adolf Hitler over the years. During the Hot Coffeegate scandal of this year, he sent an open letter praising Sen. Hillary Clinton's condemnations of the videogame industry. He used it as a chance to jump on the bandwagon once again to attack Mr. Lowenstein and demand his resignation.

Most recently, he released a statement claiming that The Sims 2 is "worse than Hot Coffee." He stated in a release that "Sims 2, the latest version of the Sims video game franchise ... contains, according to video game news sites, full frontal nudity, including nipples, penises, labia, and pubic hair."

The Sims 2, for anyone who has been living under a rock, is a life simulator from Maxis which is the sequel to the best selling videogame franchise of them all, The Sims. The last time I looked at the "nudity" in this game, it was well blurred. Certainly, I couldn't find any of the anatomical items he mentions.

However Mr. Thompson is calling foul, in a claim similar to that of the recent GTA debacle. He claims "the nudity placed there by the publisher/maker, Electronic Arts, is accessed by the use of a simple code that removes what is called 'the blur' which obscures the genital areas. In other words, the game was released to the public by the manufacturer knowing that the full frontal nudity was resident on the game and would be accessed by use of a simple code widely provided on the Internet."

In other words, he's going after the mod squads and claiming that EA Games specifically left exposed body parts underneath the blur that comes with the game. He also claims, more sinisterly, that the models of children in the game can be un-blurred, "much to the delight, one can be sure, of pedophiles around the globe who can rehearse, in virtual reality, for their abuse."

Jeff Brown, vice president of corporate communications at EA, in response to the accusations, told GameSpot news, "this is nonsense. We've reviewed 100 percent of the content. There is no content inappropriate for a teen audience. Players never see a nude sim. If someone with an extreme amount of expertise and time were to remove the pixels, they would see that the sims have no genitals. They appear like Ken and Barbie."

Thompson replied, "the sex and the nudity are in the game. That's the point. The blur is an admission that even the 'Ken and Barbie' features should not be displayed. The blur can be disarmed. This is no different than what is in San Andreas, although worse."

Thompson then updated his earlier statement, saying he is aware certain mods only remove "the blur," but added that "Electronic Arts has done nothing about this." Thompson's new conclusion: EA is "cooperating, gleefully, with the mod community to turn Sims 2 into a porn offering."

Apart from moving the goalposts somewhat there, this is an attack now not only on EA but on modders as a whole. Do bear in mind, however, that this is the guy who once said that Grand Theft Auto allows players to rape and kill pregnant women and/or children.

Thompson's attacks are disturbing. If he gets his way, then publishers will be forced to ban all mod making, stifling creative expression. This will also take away a big cornerstone of the long-term strategies that many companies have built, which includes fostering their mod communities. After all, modding managed to keep Half-Life alone going well after its sell-by date. Mods have literally become as big a part of many games as the original release itself. The existence of a thriving mod community is now being seen as essential to the long-term survival of a game franchise.

GTA and Sims mods aren't the first, nor are the last. A lot of extra content has been found buried in the final releases of many games. Take the role-playing game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II -- there were hours of dialogue, sub-quests, plot fillers and gameplay buried beneath the "full" game, which was subsequently discovered by modders and restored into the game proper.

The videogames industry may be on its heels, but should realize that the attacks will probably only get worse. If it wants to survive this recent onslaught, it needs to stand up to opportunists such as Thompson and tell them to go back into the holes from which they came. Otherwise the gaming industry is on a course to face censorship - and potential ruin.
