My friend is in deep trouble. He want to increase his pc speed

he has

P4 1.4GHZ
845 INTEL CHIPSET ODYESSEY MOBO
128 SD RAM
40 GB HDD
16X DVD ROM
ATX CABINET

he is thinking of adding a 256 Sd ram module to it
and his vendor quoted him Rs. 2400 for that with 1 yr warranty

I gave him the idea that not to invest in sd ram and replace his
system

Amd Sempron 2200+
Asus A7v400-mx
256 DDR Ram 333mhz

his vendor quoted 6700 for the above and is ready to less Rs 3000 for
his old p4,mobo and ram.

he mainly use his computer for office work, autocad 2004 and managing
photos taken from his 5 mp sony digital camera.

What do you think he shud do :?:

You can go for Asus A7N8X-VM motherboard.
Both A7N8X-VM and A7V400-MX has similar set of features. But A7N8X-VM has nForecce 2 Chipset, which has GeForce 4 MX Class Graphics Acc. integrated in it. This is more powerful than VIA UniChrome Integrated Graphics.

A7V400-MX

Go for ASUS A7V8X-MX SE MOBO
It has a AGP 8X slot also so that you could go for a decent or a good G-card in the future !!!

Pls PLs tell finally which way to go....

whether increasing the ram would be a gud idea in the existing p4 system

OR replacing it with amd system with ddr support

The general consensus here is that it's better to go for the Sempron etc. I agree, especially since the vendor is willing to accept the old set for 3k.

I'd like to add one thing : swatkat's suggestion to get a mobo with an Nforce 2 IGP is a good idea. But since this is obviously a budget system, I suggest the Krypton C18G-400 (Biostar M7NCG-400) mobo instead of the Asus A7N8X-VM. The Krypton costs about 1k less than the Asus board but has better features and performs well. I've used them both extensively.

Also, DDR400 costs almost the same as DDR333.

The OnBoard Graphics of the A7N8X-VM (it's GeForce 4 MX class GPU) is more than enough for AutoCad.

I've had the same problem previously and I had to change my motherbord because I had P4-Titan Mobo previouly which was made for sd ram but since the production of SD Ram has benn stopped that's why vendor costs much hiegher than It's original price 'cause they have limilted stock of SD Ram. But I would sugess you to get a Asrock 845-GV Mobo in replace of your old mobo & SD Ram and get 512 DDR Ram wich will approximately cost you Rs. 5000 extra. Asrock 845-Gv Supports P4 HT technology with inbuilt Intel Extreme Graphics VGA and C-Media Audio Device and has 8x AGP slot where you may add hiegher graphic card like ATI Radeon 9800 or ATI Radeon 9600 etc. latter. Using new technilogy is always better than having oldone.
