Sata 2 or IDE

Hi friends I have an old mobo 845G, and it has no support for sata. I will change the motherboard in some months but I have to buy one HDD urgently as I am running out of space.Now the question is that shall I go for an IDE HDD now or wait till I upgrade my mobo.
How much difference is there in performance..

First of all, it is not Sata 2, but it is Sata 3.0 Gbit/s.

IDE is around a 15 years old technology now and Sata is the latest technology. Sata is also Hot Swappable.

My suggestion, go to Sata 3.0 Gbit/s , there is quite a lot speed difference.

go for sata latest.. and i think for now you can use a sata to IDE convertor and use your new sata drive until you get your new mobo.. Though not sure of the process but i got the info from some friend and says its possible.. means yo can get such convertors

SATA is good option.But you can use PATA type hard disk also on new motherboards.

IMO, the best choice for you to go is for a SATA 3.0Gbps HDD along with a SATA to IDE converter available for about Rs. 300-400.

FYI,
PCI to SATA card can ONLY support a speed of upto 1.5Gbps.
PCI-X to SATA card can support upto 3.0Gbps.

PCI to SATA - 2 Port costs you about Rs. 900 - 1000.
PCI to SATA - 4 Port costs you about Rs. 3000.

I have got a Enter PCI to SATA 2 port (having SiI3x12 SATA RAID Controller) for Rs. 900 about 6 months back.
Dunno about the prices now though. Using it in my Celeron Processor & ASUS m/b. Works fine.

You could go in for the PCI to SATA 2-port card if you can afford to spend that much.

Regarding speed wise, the SATA to IDE converter does no increase in speed.
With the PCI to SATA card, You get about 50% more speed than normal IDE.

Why dont you get a new motherboard now itself?
Just delete some files and get a new Sata HDD when you get your new motherboard instead of spending 1k or more for PCI SATA card...

a 845 chipset-based mobo will not have a PCIe slot and if it is an original intel mobo it will definitely not have 1

My Sata 3.0 Gbit/s can copy and move files at 30 MB p/s speed on Vista. You could use that for some real life comparisions.

I think it means that the drive supports Perpendicular recording.... Not sure....

AFAIK, 7200.10 series are the first generation Perpendicular recording drives from Seagate. The second generation / latest are 7200.11 but they are available in capacities of 500GB and 1TB.

Well do perpendicular recording offers superior performance then the regular Sata 2's
