first u install XP normally, this will overwrite the Linux boot loader....
after this, put the Linux installation CD in ur drive and boot from it, and choose rescue mode....here type this command at the prompt....
grub-install /dev/hda

NO,
There's no way out to reinstall Windows XP without nuking your boot loader. Windows boot loaders dont give you that flexibility.

you can have your linux bootloader (grub or lilo) installed on the first sector of your boot partiton.

it is explained here

in this way you only need to backup one small file while reinstalling windows.

I use this method to dualboot.
