Processor Overclocking Issues

hey guys!
these days i've been hearing the word overclocking a lot,it seems to be a concept through which we can make our hardware a hell lot faster but have any of you guys noticed that we only hear abt the end results?
how exactly do we overclock?(especially the processor)
what kind of hardware do we need for overclocking?
is it safe?

ITs safe if u know how to do it and keep the oc under control..
For overclocking u need a good board,memory,processor...
