First, i thank digit forum and members for this

The avi file i have has been downloaded. Windows Media Player refuses to play saying a Necessary Video Codec is not there.

I got WMP 10, with all updates.

Real One Player refuses to play.

I tried to split the file and make it into VCD format, the splitter software suggested in the thread given in the link above says it is an unrecognised format.

Im totally confused, its a Guitar lesson by Paul Gilbert and very precious to me, Kindly Help.

The file is in .rar format and it refuses to open.

Im totally ignorant of Video related software and jargon.

hmm make sure you have the xvid/divx codecs installed. You can get it from the digit DVD
and another thing .rar files are archive files like .zip files . You need winrar to open rar files.

hey dude............if my guess is ri8.........this is what ur problem is.........

DO THE FOLL>>

IN WINDOWS EXPLORE

Folder Options -> View -> Hide Extension For Known File Types

Here Deselect it...

Now go to that *.avi file n rename it as *.rar

Now try opening the file using WinRAR.........

its probably a RAR archive with a video file/s in it

Extract it n then try playing the files

N FOR MORE ON VIDEO RELATED STUFF.........GO TO THE TOPIC ON MY SIGGIE..........

You need to download WinRAR - *www.rarlabs.com

Then, I assume your some rars like; .rar .r01 .r02 .r03 etc

Just open the .RAR file and extract the contents, it will automatically extract from the other rars assuming they're all in the same directory.

If you put all the 50 files in one folder, the .rar and the .r01... etc

Then install WinRAR, the icons of the .rar..r01 will change now.

Then just double click on the .RAR file and you will see the movie file in WinRAR - you then just extract this, you don't need to open the .r01.. etc as WinRAR extracts from those automatically.

Hope i got u correctly, just do as i have said, winrar will do the job for u...

DO NOT rename the avi file to RAR! maverickrohan just misunderstood what you were trying to say.

A simple fix is to use the codec packs provided in the June DVD of Digit, and install any of the Mega Codec packs and then try playing the file. If you want, you can search Google for KLCodec or any Mega Codec Pack and install those. Most avi files today use XviD or DivX codecs.

I would love to get a guitar lesson from Paul Gilbert myself, so if this is a legal download, please PM me the link!

FasTrack, then do as i said in the first post , find the missing codec (spot it from Gspot) and google it nd install.

Or a simpler way is to install all the codecs whether u need them or not.. as Raaabo said.

EDIT

WOW, i got what u wanted to say.
The Gspot download is in .rar format and it refuses to open, correct naa?

Ok get the winrar link from my second post.. and extract it. Then u can see a .exe file in that. Install Gspot now.

Now u are ready to use Gspot :D

holy molly.........

when he said the files in RAR............he meant Gspot was RAR........:))

ohh the obvio my previous solution wont work........ i thot he said Gspot showed the avi as being RAR.....cos Gspot does recognize wrong file formats in wrong containers......

the the best soln is download K-Lite Codec Pack From www.free-codecs.com

It has most of the codecs........... 99% of em

n it even has Gspot, 4CC changer, AC3 filters n the works........
