hi guys

i have a peculiar computer problem.
my xp cd doesn't boot properly.
after the screen "Press any key to boot from CD…"
i press a key.
then the screen "setup is inspecting your hardware configuration.." appears.
after that the blue screen doesn't appear & harddisk led continuously glowing.
then i have to restart it manually.

i have devloped this problem after i tested 3/4 boot loaders
i uninstalled each of the bootloader using the command fdisk /mbr.

i have no problems in booting with windows 2003,windows 2000 professional etc.Which
uses similar boot loader.

the cd quality is good, checked in my friends comp. working properly.

i am pretty sure the problem lies with the harddisk( & not with any other components),
as i connected my harddisk with my friends comp, the same problem persist.

i am able to load windows xp by initiating the installation from an existing os,no problem
occures.

by the way, my comp configuration is atholon xp 2600+,
40 gb samsung 5400 rpm,512 mb DDR333,asus A7V8x-MX SE motherboard.

plzzzzz help.

my email id is bishnu_rath@rediffmail.com

well try waiting a while at tht screen for some minutes

do u have any other winxp installed currently?

mebbe its due to some previous installtation of os's

damn those a7v8x-mx models . anyways which are the bootloaders ur using . Try running the win2k pro setup too from the cd and check if u get errors . if u get I/O errors in win2k pro ,probably drive error . dont resintall win2k , just make sure u go uptill the options of setup/recovery etc .

if win2k pro works fine , try these .
do u have graphics cards or r u using onboard graphics . if graphics card . start installation of xp without the card and using just the onboard card . Reduce the agp settings ( u have 2 options in bios ) in bios or reset it to default . if ur able to install xp completely this way , then change ur display adapter to standard vga and then add ur graphics card and install its drivers .

i have no graphics card.
running on onboard graphics (sharing 32M default)

booting into win2000 cd causes no trouble.

the bootloaders i have tried are

1.boot manager next generation
2.master booter32
3.osl2000
4.xosl115

ok , read somewhere using fdisk /mbr , though helpful in some cases , might cause probs in others , try getting another copy of the xp cd . i just lost a win2k cd on an old amigo cd (really bad quality) , got similar probz as urs , works in some , doesnt in others , so i just got another copy and it worked fine . regarding bootloaders , try to run fixmbr command from win2k cd or recovery console , if u have installed it already . if that doesnt fix it , try fixboot for ur winxp partition .

the mbr has nuthing to do with it here ...
try installing another os .. ( i think u have one installed i dunno i dun have time to go thru the whole thing )
do a low level format of ur whole drive ....
then use the bootable cd to install and check it !
use spinrite btw ... its good !
ofcourse backup ur data at ur friends comp if he lets u

@rave : u state that mbr has nothing to do with the problem , yet u advice a low level format , which would also fix the mbr . couldnt this be initially done with the fixmbr itself and then the fixboot . while booting from the win2k cd , doesnt the cd startup program check the mbr first for info on the disk , rather than any other part of the disk ? Plus he encountered the problem after using multiple boot loaders . plus only for win2k cd too . Hence the suggestion for fixmbr . i am just kurious if there is anyother reason why mbr plays no role in this .
anyways does spinrite work in fixing the bad sectors , if found or alienating them . got a couple of hdd which aint working , might try it .

man i barely read his post ...
im sorry ... i skipped the part abt the boot loaders blah blah ...
besides ...i think i was thinking more abt the partition table than the MBR as such

either ways ... yeah spinrite can fix bad sectors to a certain limit ....
check it out ...

and a LLF could help besides fixing the mbr too ....

Solution

Hi
i also experienced the same problem two days.
Solution , first check ur disk with scandisk.
This was the Hard disk problem (I have 80GB harddisk).
This may be ridiculous but yet we have to follow.

1.Try scandisk
2.Next formatting ur c drive and try again
3. Approach ur harddrive vendor and tell him and ask him to repair that.

I approached samsung (since my HDD is samsung) and now i am able to install xp and type the solution for you.

u can PM me for more

>>Boot into the comp with Win 98 floppy or CD
>>Start the computer without CD-ROM support or whatever, but don't run setup
>>type in the following command
fdisk /mbr
>>Restart
>>This should do
>>Well, if you have physical damages, I can't help

fdisk /mbr for Windows XP? Dude, there's a command called fixmbr for Windows 2000/XP. And klinux and raven have suggested fixmbr and other ways of getting around the problem. Don't take this the wrong way, but read before you post.

hi guys thanks a lot for all the suggestion, but my problem still persist.

when the problem occured ,at that time my hd has 2 xp os(1 in the primary fat32 c:,the other
in the first partition of extended which was ntfs D:)all other partitions in the extened are
fat32.

after the problem occured,in panic i boot from 98 cd
delete, recreate & format the primary partition using fdisk.
then loaded 98 os on my primary.then boot into 98 run the xp cd & upgradeed it.
then again boot into the primary xp & run the xp cd to load xp into the ntfs partition.
during installation i delete & recreated the ntfs partition & formatted as ntfs.

now after all this the 2 os are running perfectly ok
but my original problem(xp cd not booting) remains as it is.

--------------------------------------------------------------

now as per the suggestion given by most of u.

i boot from the win2k cd go through the recovery console, it detected both the os.
go through the first one, issued the following commands in this order

chkdsk c: /p
chkdsk d: /p
fixmbr
fixboot c:
fixboot d:

but the problem remain as it is.
i have also tried the chkdisk utility within xp.

---------------------------------------------------------------
my last hope lies with spinrite.
i have just downloaded spinrite v.6.0 (cracked)
& created the bootable cd using the *.iso file
by the way raven is this version ok .

as for the low level format,
i am a bit reluctant to delete my extended partiton as it contains a lot of data
& my friend harddisk doesn't have that much free space.but i will have to do it anyway
but i need some time.

in sprinrite, i don't get any option for llf
it has 2 options

level 2 for recovery
level 4 for mantainance

if i choose 4 then it says it will do a surface check.
if i do this surface check data will remain intact or will be lost.
roughly how much time it will take for entire 40gb?
should i do it for entire harddisk or partion by partition??
will it be possible to pause & resume?

any other tips&tricks regarding spinrite will be highly welcome.

i will post further progrsss as soon as possible.

if u already havent started spinrite , u could download samsung disk utilites , which does 2 scans , one without destroying data and gives u a report on ur hdd , another one clears all info in case u want totally blank disk .
check whether shdiag or hutil is used for ur model number and then run it . The short / quick tests are quick . if u have time run the longer tests too , just to make sure the hdd is fine . remember to read all the warning popups carefully and note the error code down , if u get any

PROBLEM SOLVED PROBLEM SOLVED PROBLEM SOLVED

thanks to everybody who contribute their valuable suggestions.

special thanks to klinux.

here goes the story.

first uses hutil(as my model is SV4012H) to make a surface scan.
no problems found.
then tried the : erase hdd>low level format option which gave a error
can't format.

then uses samsung disk manager ( older version not the latest one)
then tried the standard installation of disk option which gave a error something like
"critical severe error...can't do....".
then tried the advanced installation of disk which gave the same error.

then at last,
i do a low level format(under option menu)which take very less time compared
to surface scan of spinrite/hutil.
then after that i choose zero fill drive.(I don't know whether it was required)
zero fill drive takes slightly more time than low level format.
now my xp sp2 cd is booting properly.
:p :p :D
i have heard that zero fill drive & low level format are same thing then what
is diff between these two options in disk manager.

moral of the story
if anybody is not able solve their harddisk problem by partition magic/fdisk/diskpart
then back up ur whole drive & go for disk manager which is avialable for almost all hard disk manufacturer.

gr8 :) . now u can take a backup of ur MBR with the disk manager and keep the disk manager floppy safe . If u wanna be extra careful . Next time u burn any data cd , just use the disk manager floppy in nero's boot image option and u will have a bootable disk manager from ur cd-rom , instead of the volatile floppy
