I had initially thought of goin for a 8gb pen drive but now dropped it coz for almost the same price(3.5k),I can make a Pportable HDD with External Casing...:D

But Iam damn confused now after deciding to get an Portable HDD...:(.Loads questions in my mind...:p

I got a really old rig which only supports IDE.But got a USB 2.0 controller.
Now can I go for a SATA HDD with d Casing havin support for both IDE+SATA..:confused:
And I guess speed wont differ since external casing use USB 2.0,but just inclined to SATA,since it mite b cheaper.:rolleyes:

Also Iam bit confused wat HDD to go for 2.5"/3.5"...:confused:
*Would 3.5" be portable enough(just normal use) or I shud go for 2.5"
*3.5+External casing wud require external power or just plug n play..??
*And if i go for a 2.5" HDD wat wud be the capacity options available.Capacity needed 80GB/80GB+(120/160 wud b Gr88)

Hope that U guys help me in settng this up.
Budget:3~3.5k

Help guys..!!!

Wire muncher!
IDE or SATA support doesn't matter. Whatever the interface, its converted to USB when you put it in a casing. IDE maxes out at 133Mbps while SATA is much faster (starts at 300mbps). So you can go in for a casing which supports SATA.

Secondly, a Laptop HDD is very handy and can better take shocks but is more expensive than a desktop HDD. It can fit in your shirt pocket and does away with external power supply.

Is it a 2.5" HDD or a 3.5" HDD coz it a int mentioned...but I assume its a 2.5" HDD since its plug n play...:)

Hi man,

Now can I go for a SATA HDD with d Casing havin support for both IDE+SATA
AFAIK, i don't think there is a HDD case which supports both IDE/SATA interfaces. (Anyone Correct me if I am wrong).

And I guess speed wont differ since external casing use USB 2.0,but just inclined to SATA,since it might be cheaper.
2.5" IDE to SATA drive Price difference is Rs 200-400 approx
3.5" IDE to SATA drive Price difference is Rs 50-200 approx
so IDE is bit cheaper.

I recommend you to go for SATA drives as they are faster than IDE drives.

Also Iam bit confused wat HDD to go for 2.5"/3.5".
Regarding 2.5",
* 2.5" drive with case can easily fit into a medium sized pocket
* Requires no Power supply unless mentioned for the case
* Light Weight
* Laptop Drives are expensive, have lesser storage capacity & have Lesser RPM (newer ones have more rpm but are even more expensive)
* 2.5" drives generate lesser heat than 3.5" drives (also depends on rpm. more the rpm, more the heat)

Regarding 3.5",
* Bigger Case
* Needs an EXTERNAL power supply for the case
* Heavier than 2.5"
* Can get Higher rpm drives, Larger storage space & much cheaper than 2.5" for the same price u give
* 3.5" drives generate more heat than 3.5" drives
* Also you can connect this HDD to your PC if need be.

I can't recommend which one you will be going for unless I know what you will be using it for. Only thing I can say is the following:

Go for 2.5"
-> If you are concerned about weight.
-> NO need for any external power supply
-> Not bent upon a large HDD space
-> Concerned about heat issues

Go for 3.5"
-> If you want Larger HDD space for the money you want to spend
-> No Weight issues
-> Not concerned on using external HDD

My recommendation are the following ones if you are going for anything

Prices from Computer Warehouse, Bangalore

For 3.5" HDD
Seagate IDE HDD Prices (all 7200 RPM)
160 GB -> Rs. 2290
250 GB -> Rs. 2860
300 GB -> Rs. 3050
320 GB -> Rs. 3610

Seagate SATA HDD Prices (all 7200 RPM)
160 GB Serial ATA -> Rs. 2350
250 GB Serial ATA -> Rs. 2880
300 GB Serial ATA -> Rs. 3180
320 GB Serial ATA -> Rs. 3690

For 2.5" HDD
Seagate IDE HDD Prices
80 GB -> Rs. 2650
100 GB -> Rs. 2800
120 GB -> Rs. 3520

Seagate SATA HDD Prices
80 GB SATA -> Rs. 2600
120 GB SATA -> Rs. 3650

For 3.5" HDD Cases
HDD Casing IDE + cable -> Rs. 490
HDD Casing IDE + IEEE -> Rs. 1000
HDD Casing SATA -> Rs. 950
HDD Casing SATA (Enter) -> Rs. 1500

For 2.5" HDD Cases
Hard Disc Casing IDE -> Rs. 240
Disc Casing Trasand IDE -> Rs. 660
Disc Casing (Twinmose/Enter) IDE -> Rs. 475
HDD Casing SATA LT -> Rs. 500
HDD Casing SATA LT Trancend -> Rs. 780

NOTE: for the above 2.5" HDD, the rpm will mostly be 4500/5400/7200 rpm. Enquire before buying those.
Also other HDD manufacturer might even give it for lesser prices.

You can combo any of the above mentioned till you get your budget right.

My (personal) recommendation would be going for a SATA 3.5" drive + some good case since I get more capacity & speed. also i can reuse the HDD if my PC (having SATA ports) support it.

I also ask you to go for a good case rather than some cheap ones.

A last thing I want to add is even if you get SATA I(150Gbps = 150MBps) or SATA II (300 Gbps = 300 MBps) HDD, the case will only support SATA I & inturn it will be converted to USB2.0/1.1. So unless u have a case with eSATA capabilities you won't utilize the full potential of the SATA I/II HDD

If you are interested in drives with cases from Major HDD manufacturers, you can go for the following:
80 GB W.D Ext 2.5" -> Rs. 3450
120 GB W.D Ext 2.5" -> Rs. 3950

80 GB Seagate Free Agent Ext 2.5" -> Rs. 3600
120 GB Seagate Free Agent Ext 2.5" -> Rs. 4600
250 GB Seagate Ext 3.5" -> Rs. 4700

Hopefully this answers all of you queries.

Awesome...!!!
Thanks a lot shadow2get for such a detailed reply..!!!

Since portability is an issue for me so I would be goin fot 2.5" HDD..:D
But now Iam a dilemma again:confused:
Iam confused whether I should get a 2.5" HDD + casing or a branded 2.5" External HDD(casing included)
:rolleyes:

With branded 2.5" External HDD,can i increase d capacity later on..? n With 2.5" HDD + casing,can i use the HDD later on to my lappy..?

Branded Ex HDD has a lot of issues

1 Warranty.....the whole kit has a warranty ranging from 1yr to 3 yrs
but an assembled one ---HDD alone hitachi/wd/seagate-5 years

no if u change capacity warranty will be void....

certain companies stuff in poor/old ver HDD in their branded HDD...for example Lacie ...a ex hdd comapny earlier used to provide refurbished hdd in their cases

Seagate free agent has a lot of hdd issues

Best in 2.5 range will be

Transcend ide 2.5 casing + seagate/WD/Hitachi 80/100 gb

850 Rs + 2850/3000 Rs

Enjoy
