hi friends
i am a new linux user.I have recently installed Fedora Core 4 on my pc and facing some problems.Plz help me to fine tune my pc.

1.I have Pixel View PlayTV Pro - tv tuner card. But when i try to configure the default tv player in FC4(TVtime Player),it shows no input signal.I have set the tv standard as PAL (which is the one in India) and the frequency table to Europe( Since these are the closest one,and i even tried all other options as well). But still no result.I tried searching the hardware browser provided in linux. It shows two things- Bt878 video capture and Bt878 audio capture device in PCI slots. In short i have tried all things i can do (checking all the configuring options on the menu of the tv player),But no result.I guess if i have to download any linux driver or something for my tv card!!!

2.I have installed mplayer( Since there is no mpg player provided with FC4) but it works in terminal only. When i downloaded the skins from the respective site, they did not work out, even when i placed the skins in `/.mplayer/Skin/ directory.I even created a link to mplayer, named it gmplayer and run gmplayer from terminal. It then messaged that mplayer compiled without gui support.I even tried these options

mplayer -skin myskin
gmplayer -skin myskin

But still no support of gui !!!
Is there separate installation for GUI version of mplayer?

3.I have seen some softwares with .tar.bz extension. After unzipping them, they show folders like usr, share, lib etc. So i want to know if i put the contents of these folders in the respective folders at the / ,will the thing work ?

Those are the source code of the application. You have to compile and install it
./configure
make
make install

About mplayer try typing mplayer in the run command box.

mplayer is the command line video playing tool, and gmplayer is the GUI frontend to it. It seems that the version of mplayer you installed was not compiled with gmplayer, and hence you only have the command line tool. Symlinking gmplayer to mpayer is not going to help at all. It is possible that gmplayer is provided in a seperate package, do check the site from where you downloaded it. You could also try looking for another package or compiling the software from source.

About the tar.bz2 software, most often these are source tarballs, which should be installed by the way vignesh mentioned, but from your description, they sound more like binary packages. If you are sure they are official packages and are meant for your distribution, you can simple extract them at the / (root) location.

I hv 3 RPM files for installing MPlayer:

Code:
mplayer-common-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm
mplayer-gui-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm
mplayer-skin-default-1.0-2.noarch.rpm

And I hv to give following command to install MPlayer successfully:

Code:
rpm -Uvh mplayer-common-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm mplayer-gui-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm mplayer-skin-default-1.0-2.noarch.rpm

type "lspci" and then "lsmod" (without quotes) in a console window as root. then post the output here.

Actualy Pixel view will just work. You have already done the important changes. Have you let is scan the channes after that?
One more thing please dont play with much post processing on it other than adaptive sampling, it will be more likely to crash.

If you still cant get it working mail me(Bharat_r you can too) I will send you mine tvtime configuration file which you can copy on to your home directory and check.

Generally to install rpm which are a part of a single install, copy them in to a folder. Open up terminal, go to that folder and issue rpm -ivh *.rpm
incase you are upgrading from the rpms then issue rpm -iUvh *.rpm
Just make sure that you dont have any old rpms in that folder that you dont want to install.

Tar/gz file are almost every time are source files, new users should stick to rpms, debs and the likes. Of course if you wan to adventure then you can first copy then to a reasonable folder like downloads.

open up a terminal go there and Issue
tar -zxvf [filename].tar.gz (or it may be tgz)
in case its bz2 or tat.bz then
tar -jxvf [filename].tar.bz etc

Then go to that directory and always read the README file and the INSTALL file they will give you what need to be done correctly.

For movies download mplayer rpms which vishal_have mentioned above and install them.

Well, it looks like the modules/drivers for your card are loaded up alright! I don't have much idea about what is needed to set up a TV Tuner card in linux, but do check this article, if you haven't already -

And also search www.tldp.org , there is a lot of good info there.

i started this thread on 18th Aug.
Today is 26th Aug.
For past 8 days i have been trying to get my tuner work in linux.
but the only success i have got is that the tvtime now plays "only" the channel which was played on windows xp last time.
and thats after i added following in module.conf file
option bttv card=37

i tried
$tvtime-scanner
but it only shows one channel on different frequencies(the one i played last on xp)
Plz help me
i am providing the details as below

When i run java programs in FC4 in terminal it shows errors, even though i had compiled and run these programs successfully in windows XP.
Especially in programs of inheritance, i get error.
I am using J2SDK 1.4 on windows and the default one on FC4.
Can anyone tell me why there is difference on the two OS when JAVA is platform independent ?
