Hi Everyone,

Here is my answers to the questionnaire along with my other notes. I am newbie as far as PC building is concerned. So, please give me your suggestions keeping this in mind :-D. I would really appreciate if you can give some detailed comments. Thanks a lot in advance...

1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans:
Home Use: Watching HD movies, Storing and listening to tonnes of music.
Web development: Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, illustrator, Eclipse IDE, PhoneGap, Multiple browsers running at the same time with multiple tabs, multiple virtual machines running at the same time.
Games: Age of Empires 2 & 3. That is all I play. Not much of a gamer.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 45K (+5K max)

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: No

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Windows 7 / Ubuntu

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 1 TB minimum. But, if my budget can accommodate it, I would like to have more. If possible, an SSD?

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: Yes. Biggest possible monitor that falls within my budget with best possible resolution. Need advice here as I don't have much idea about monitors :-D

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: N/A. Been using a laptop for 7+ years. Never had a desktop.

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: September 2013

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: No. Please suggest what I should do?

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: Chennai. Can buy locally and/or online.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: 5 things
11.1 – I want this build to be long lasting. It should hold for atleast another 5 years. My next upgrade will be in 2019 only.
11.2 – I want this to be less power consuming. Don’t want to have electric bill shocks :-D. So, AMD or Intel? I am very confused (see next point).
11.3 – I want this to be value for money. That is why I decided to build one instead of buying a pre-built one or laptop. So, AMD or Intel? I am very confused (see above point too).
11.4 I would like it to be as much portable as possible. I am living in Chennai right now, but MAY move to other cities soon / later. So, a little portability would help.
11.4.1 On a side note, will a Mac mini fit my use cases? I know it is pre-built, expensive, etc. but its portability aspect is alluring me, LOL
11.5 My current shopping list:

Inside the Case:
Processor
CPU Cooler - Is this required for my use-case?
Motherboard
RAM
HDD - Biggest possible one within my budget
SSD - Will this fit within my budget?
Video Card - Is this required for my use-case? i.e. Should I buy a discrete one?
Sound Card - Is this required for my use-case? i.e. Should I buy a discrete one?
Network Card (Ethernet) - I guess this will be part of the motherboard?
Wireless Network Card - I guess this will be part of the motherboard? or Should I buy a discrete one?
Power Supply - Is this required for my use-case?
Outside the Case:
Case / Cabinets
Keyboard
Mouse
Mouse pad LOL
Speakers
Monitor
Web Camera
Router
Spike Buster & Surge Protector
UPS

@ avinandan012: I am not a heavy gamer, I just play on the weekends, that too not any latest games.

@ bavusani and harshilsharma63: Thanks for your suggestions. I will research further on these and get back to you if I have any questions / doubts.

Get Intel it's power consumption is very low compared to AMD"s. It will cost you 5k more than what Harshil suggested. Just replace it with i5 4430 and some b85 mobo for 6k-7k combo will cost u about 18-19k.

How many times does it need to be explained on this forum? Even in the worst of the worst case, you cannot save more than 2.5k an year when running the PC 15 hours a day for the whole year. And even after spending an extra 5 k for an Intel config, OP wouldn't notice any gaming performance improvement and will even loose overclockability.

I am the night...I am...
Yup, non K i5 + b85 is a better deal in the long run if power consumption is a priority.

That said, both 4300 and 6300 consume less power than their 8 core counterparts. They are very much acceptable.
6300 + 970 board will be extremely VFM.

> There are three series of HDD from WD: Blue, green and black. So, while suggesting one, also mention which series are you referring too.

skip the fans & get 7770. You can add fans later.

Many people doesn;t overclock, and he mentioned that he do not want to overclock. Plus Intel is better for long run.

And HD 7750 cost about 6800 if I'm not wrong?

^^ I agree with the 1st part of yours that since OP is ot overclocking, an i5 can be recommended. But could you elaborate a little why Intel is better for long run while AMD is not?
