i want to make a website something on the lines of
*www.gracejacob.in/
*sriram.freewebsites.com/
etc..

{ie mainly a website and not a blog }

but i want it to be absolutely free but i do not want to make it based on the ready made templates offered by the sites such as
www.freewebs.com

i want to design my website on my own but without doing any kind of coding.
i want to use some softwares to do that.
pls tell me the means to go about this from scratch like

getting the right softwares, getting a free hosting site....everything
pls be kind enough to teach me the things.

Frontpage and Dreamweaver are paid. So if you don't want to resort to piracy, have a look at NVu or Bluevoda or Yahoo Site Builder. They all are free and good!

Then have a look at FreeTemplates or Interspire for free templates. There are many sites that provide such free templates so google it up! You will find paid templates also. Alternatively, get help of a designer and have a template made.

Also see sites like www.w3schools.com and www.w3c.org. w3schools is a hugh resource of knowledge for learning basics of lots of web-technologies.

For starting with websites, you can even use your word processor... Most of them such as MS Word, OpenOffice.org Writer and Lotus Wordpro have functionality to create HTML documents including a few basic templates...

Please don't ever use Word for making web-sites!! It puts in so much trash that size of the pages is almost double. For the same reason, Dreamweaver has a function called "CLEAN-UP WORD HTML" :D It reduces the file size to 50% without changing the looks the browser :))

Frontpage has a problem. It makes the sites with only IE in mind. So the pages may look different in other browsers. It was alright a few years ago when IE had more than 95% market share. But now-a-days you can't afford it. IE's share has dropped below 75%. Check this

There are people who say that the junk put in by word is actually useful... Read that in a computer magazine article (if I remember correctly, it was the first page article by Editor) a while back... But I agree, most of the Meta Tags put in by Word are not needed...

I want to know where I can get Favicons? Do we need to pay and get them? I suck in graphics and stuffs. So It's out of question that I do it myself.

yes Dreamweaver is this best option
Download trial version of Dreamweaver for 15days so you dont cross the privacy policies & i think 15 days is fair enough for making a website

Good looks without good content won't last for sure. But then its also important to have good looks for a web-site. Your web-site won't get popular (or will take longer to be popular) without good looks. Its really important to give a pleasant experience to the visitors to your site if you want them to selll your products and/or want them to come back and click on your ads!!

Why do you think there are hundreds of skins/themes available for something like WordPress? Why do you think sites offerring free templates or paid templates are doing good? Looks may not be the most important thing. But it surely is important!
