in my opinion the the sata cable(i dont know what others call it)the thin cable joining the sata hdd and mobo is loose or else it could be RAM problem.you did say ram and hdd is working now try to get a new sata cable and check if your pc hangs or not.
i had similar problem in 2006 and found out that joining of sata cables on each ends was loose.it was particularly loose on sata hdd.

yeah make sure the the power cables connected are tight enough....mainly the one connected to your GFX card....a faulty converter of my GFX card gave me red and green patches at BIOS and crashed.

best of luck!

this problem may also due to failure of L1 or L2 cache on your processor. You can try memtest86+ to find any fault in memory. you can download it in *www.memtest.org/

I had connected only ram, power supply and motherboard. And again it give me red and green crash screen.
And power supply chord has been plugged properly.

I had downloaded the memtest 86 V2.01 bootable file now what should i do.

Before doing a memory test goto BIOS and disable both L1 & L2 Cache. Then Boot the system. If the system boots normally then the fault is with processor cache memory.
You can burn the ISO image of memtest onto the disk and boot from this disk.
