You need sata modules in the distro, which almost all 2.6.8>= have.Fedora 4 have some problem with intel boards...which can be sloved...also specify which model hdd...sometimes board controllers also needed to be detected. In few distros like RH/Fedora,U have the facility to give the installer the needed modules by inserting a floppy/CD containing the modules, when the installer asks whether extra modules needed to be loaded....(unfortunately i dont know where u will get those modules)....

If using Debian 'Sarge', just ive linux26 parameter which booting from CD/DVD. That will take care of everywhere.
As prakash kerala told you, Sata support need kernel 2.6 above.. There are backports available for kernel 2.4 also, but who'll get involved in all that mess right? :)
