I feel lost with so many options. There are so many brands and each have so many variants. Like Lenovo has a G-series, B-series and Thinkpads. I can get a laptop with similar specification on all three but only the price is different. I don't get it. Whats the difference. Same thing with dell with Inspiron, Vostro and so on.
Then there is first gen, second gen and third gen...

I just want a laptop to do programming on.

I was thinking Dell with a second gen i3 since older technology is always much cheaper. Is the 3rd gen i5 really worth the price difference.

"New! Inspiron 15" with a i3 second gen processor for RS 31500
or
"Lenovo G580" with a i5 third gen processor for RS 35185

The Lenovo doesn't have windows. Windows is preferable but not necessary since I will mostly be using Ubuntu anyway.

I only chose these two models because they were one of the first ones in google search. (Thx Dell for having a user friendly site). I am open to any other recommendations.

1) What is your budget? (INR)

30k to 35k can push to 40k if you guys think its worth it.

2) What size & weight consideration (if any) would you prefer?

Mainstream: 15" or more

3) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?

Any Brand

4) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?

I will be programming. Java, Ruby, Rails, etc

5) What screen resolution(s) & type (glossy/matte) would you prefer?

Matte if price allows. Mostly be reading text so it should be comfortable to read

Lenovo g580 is good choice as per your requirements.
3rd gen i5 will suffice for your programming needs.tue integrated graphics 4000
can handle most games at low settings.Check for the qvailability of G580 with windows locally.

Have a look at Samsung NP300E5X-A01IN, its great for the price i.e. only 33.5k

Wow that is awesome for that price. Just worried about the reliability thou. Since I will be using it for work, I rather play safe. I donno, what do you guys think of Samsung in terms of reliability compared to lenovo or hp.

Also should I go for a 2nd gen i3? Is the performance difference really worth the price difference. Normally the the price is high for new technology because of hype.
