Is there a software or tools which lets us know the exact file type. IrfanView is good for graphics file. If any image file with wrong extension or (without any extension) is

opened within IV, it lets us know the exact file extension.

But I am in search for the sw, that lets us know any type (or most popular type) of file. It does not necessary have to show the content, but should be able to display the

application name and version in which it was created.

I can recognize few graphics file and executable (.exe) file by opening them in text editor. The first few characters is enough to recognize the file.

First few characters which means the file is

BM ------->Bitmap File
GIF89a ------->GIF file
‰PNG ------->PNG File
PK -------> Winzip or (PKZIP) file
MZ -------> Executable file (exe, dll, cpl)
??JFIF -------> JPEG file
%PDF -------> PDF file
RIFF??WAVEfmt -------> Wave sound file

There's one called TrId (thanks to Dex),to identify the file types of the file without extension.

TrID is a command line tools and there's a Gui version also,called TrIDNet,visit:-
