I have Windows XP as my OS. When I installed win XP, The icons for IE, Control panel and Printers and faxes was visible. But, later, they disappeared. IE icons appears to be like the unknown file icon while the Control panel and printers and faxes folders appear like normal folders.

Solution urgetly required

download and install 'tune-up utilities' from www.download.com.
in it use 'system control>correct problems'. it shud take clear of your problems. :)

also no harm in checking for virus and spyware too, just in case. try avast anti-virus and microsoft anti-spyware.

Sounds like you removed a critical win file. Boot from the win cd, and attempt to repair. Do not start repair from the first prompt, but continue as if you were installing a new windows, without formatting of course. It should find your current windows, and then give you the option to repair. Use then to see about restoring any missing files.

Hope this wud help u

You can also give a try to internet explorer repairing. You can find more at microsoft.com on this article.
