Help with Over Clocking! Plz..

I Know there are a lot of threads that explain how can Overclocking be done. But i'll b grateful if someone can help me with OC'ing my System just by explaining a few things :D :) :p

This is my sysinfo: p4 3.0 ghz Ht ( Presscot ) 800 mhz Fsb 1 mb l2 cache,Original intel 865 mobo /socket 478 (Asrock),2 * 512 Mb ddr Ram @ 133 mhz ,Geforce FX 5200 128 mb. I guess that's enuf.

:arrow: In my bios under CPU Configuration the FSB is at 200 Mhz by default. the values can b adjusted from 66 - 300 mhz.

:arrow: the V-Core value is locked, It's set to 15. I know that it's the ratio between processor speed and the FSB. So 200 * 15 = 3000 Mhz

:?: :idea: So from the above info if i increase the FSB to 210 mhz gradually then can my system run @ 210 * 15 = 3.15 Mhz ??? :?: :?:

I wan't to try this out but i know there are more experienced OC'ers in this Forum, :D So i thought of asking u'r help. Help Please. What i'm afraid is whether something will happen to my system if i try this out. Will there b any problems ??

First before you follow my advice i like to remind you
- Any damages done to your hardware are not my responsibility
- You are completely responsible for what ever you do.

Intel sadly has its CPU Multiplier locked at 15 for 3Ghz

So you cant do anything to change that 15.
[In AMD it be lowered down like 12/11/10....]

Also your FSB x CPU Mul = final speed in Mhz

So that now leaves you with only one option to
increase your FSB.

Increase your FSB in small intervals of 5Mhz
Also keep a watch on CPU Temp.

Also note that as you increase your CPU freq your
ram also gets overclocked.

So when you overclock that CPU with FSB this is what happens

CPU
205 x 15 = 3075

Ram
205x2 = 410

Go like this 5/10/15/20 ... keep a watch on your temps it shud not exceed 60 at full load.

Also if your Ram is not able to help you there
ram dividers that will help you to run your ram at lower speeds.

Also i cant gurantee that upto how much can you overclock your Pentium.

Also use a thermal paste like Artic silver 5 and a cooler like ASUS StarIce or Coolermaster Ultra Vortex to cool your CPU so that you can overclock more.

With decent enough cooling and a rock stable PSU,you can easily touch 4 GHz on that chip.

Prescotts are well known overclockers but sadly they are famous for running extremely hot too.

SO i suggest,before venturing into Overclocking,you take care of cooling first,then you can think of going extreme.

Well there is a 2.4 GHz Celeron,its called Celeron D.Its based on prescott Core.I could reach 4Ghz on it.I guess this explains its overclocking potential.

Also since its a Asrock Board,dont expect to pull off a stunner but you should surely do 3.6-3.8 on it,provided you can manipulate the Vcore.

Also P4 Overclocking [Not LGA775] is pretty straightforward.Just keep on increasing the FSB as there isnt much to be done on multiplier side nor is there anything to do with FSb Multiplier as is the case with A64.

I considerthat you are using generic RAM so i suggest you use a divider before starting to safeguard your RAM.

:arrow: U Guys said about Divider! What's it actually? Can it be bought from somewhere or is it some kinda technique! Why sud we use it to generic ram sticks. Also, I donot have dual channel memory. So the two 512 mb sticks are operating @ 133 Mhz in single Channel. How do Ram get's OC'ed plz explain :?: :idea: :p

:arrow: Where is Artic Silver available? How much does it cost? Another area of concern is , even at normal usage my CPU temp, goes past 50degC. So is that a matter of concern? I saw in Digit that even If Artic Silver is applied there won't b much change in temp(only abt 4 to 5 degs). I guess i saw this in Agent 001 Somewhere! So plz explain abt it! :) :p

Ram Divider is a option in BIOS
Eg

Suppose your FSB is at 200 now your processor is running at
200 x 15 = 3000

Your Ram speed is also determined from FSB
i.e. its 200x2 = 400Mhz

Now when you increase your FSB to overclock your CPU you
also increase your Ram speed.

For eg. your CPU might be capable of 3.6Ghz i.e 3600Mhz

So you will have to increase your FSB to 240 i.e. 240x15 = 3600
So now your Ram will run at 240 x 2 = 480Mhz

Normally Generix rams might or might not be able t orun at frequencies
like 480 since they are DDR400.

So here Divider option comes in

The following Dividers are there as standard
DDR 400 [1:1] , DDR 333 [5:6] , DDR 266 [2:3] , DDR 200 [1:2]

So now how Divider helps you overclock your CPU to the limit

CPU with 240 x 15 = 3600
Ram with Divider speeds
DDR 400 Divider - 1:1 - 240x1/1 = 240 | 240x2 = 480Mhz Final speed
DDR 333 Divider - 5:6 - 240x5/6 = 200 | 200x2 = 400Mhz Final speed
DDR 266 Divider - 2:3 - 240x2/3 = 160 | 160x2 = 320Mhz Final speed
DDR 200 Divider - 1:2 - 240x1/2 = 100 | 100x2 = 200Mhz Final speed

Your ram will run at above mentioned following speeds when overclocked
to 240 Mhz to acheive max overclock of your CPU.

Note :- i have just used 240 as any arbitary FSB Speed it might go more
or less depends.

Keep an eye on your temps.

Also use software like memtestx86 to test mem stability at overclocked speed and prime95 to test CPU stability.

Prime 95 Small FFT Test for atleast 12Hrs to test stability of the overclocked processor.

Phew!!!!!!!!

Artic Silver 5 is a thermal paste which comes for Rs650 - 6g

I hav Cpu-z it also shows the speeds of processor and ram. can it be used to Test?

I'll learn a bit more and try to follow your guidelines. Thanks a lot :D.

also sometimes its mention 1T whts that????

and also i heard sometimes temp doesnt increase much...but still its said not to increase the v core above some vtg??why???and wht is vdimm....

1T is command Rate of Ram
It performs better at 1T and lesser at 2T
always keep the command rate at 1T.

the more the Vcore that passes thru ur processor the more it heats and the temp rises.
Increase the Vcore untill the temps are in control.

Vdimm is the voltage that is passed thru ur ram
u increase Vdimm if it gets unstable when ram is
overclocked
