I think Ubuntu breezy is what fits ur need, perhaps simply mepis also will do...
if u want full distros(gnome+kde+...) try Fedora core 4 or Suse 9.3/opensuse 10.0

Though I haven't used it I've heard a lot about Ubuntu and seems a great one.
Suse 10 is also great. I've used OpenSuse 10.0. Gives a good performance.
Also Fedora is good and easy.
I would say first choice Ubuntu.

i would recommend gentoo. Its a bit difficult to load initially but works out beautfully at end. I use it on my tosiba tecra s2 no problems till date.

Go in for Ubuntu its the best for ur needs and is very easy to setup and use and it dosent suck on the battery life of ur Laptop, where as on the other Gentoo is a bit hard to setup( atleast i think so coz i had some problem with it) but if u get running then it works just as good as ne other distro
