HELP: NO SOUND ON MY PC...

I recently got a virus (or spyware ) on my PC that is giving me lots of troubles.

I am using Win 2000 SP4 with IE6.
it has changed the IE homepage to *www.rover-host.com/infected.html
The homepage cant be changed in IE->Tools-> Internet Options. The area is greyed out...

I scanned using Kaspersky (with upto date definitions), Online Bit Defender scan, Spybot (with most recent definitions), Ad-aware, but nothing solved the problem....

also tried to use Windows Defender Beta 2, but it gave an error->
Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender Service to stop. To start the service, restart the computer or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually.
I tried to manually start service from My Computer->Properties->Manage->Services and Applications->Services, but same error was there.
Why am i getting this error?? How to solve it?

Also, no sound is coming from my PC anymore.. The little speaker thing isnt visible at the bottom of window... No songs etc can be heard.. I viewed Control Panel-> Sounds and could not preview any of the sounds set for various functions there (area was greyed out)...
All sound devices (Avance AC'97 Audio) are working fine, as shown in Device Manager)

Well, I reinstalled the sound card drivers from the motherboard CD, but it didnt help. No sound still.

Well I fixed some of the harmful entries using Hijack This....
IE problem cured....

But sound card problem persists.
I uninstalled the drivers... Restarted PC... Installed latest drivers... restarted... sound was fine.... The shut down PC....
When i started my PC then, no sound and the sound icon in taskbar was also no longer visible...
What the hell is this problem??? I am very irritated due to this now...
plz help me ASAP.......

The IE prob on my PC is fixed now, but i still have problem with sound....
I have no sound whatsoever on win 2000 SP4
I have Realtek Avance AC'97 Audio Card (onboard) with the latest drivers installed..
When i reinstall sound drivers and restart, sound comes, but when i restart after tht or shut down, no sound comes.
Device manager shows everything as fine..
dxdiag show i have no sound card..
No sound icon in taskbar
In control panel-> Sounds and multimedia-> Hardware, everything is fine... But i cant preview any sound in thre audio tab... No songs or audio in games work...

Sound works perfectly fine on Win XP SP2 (dual boot PC... So, sound card is fine, there is no prob with it)..

Plz tell me a solution for this problem
It is extremely irritating to hear a beep everythime something pops up...


Also, when i try to print something (HP Deskjet 610C), i get an error msg saying tht
There was an error found when printing the document <<Document name here>> to LPT1:.
Do you want to retry or cancel the job.
Plz help me here as well....

boot ur pc in safe mode and then have a look at the device manager.

well problem fixed, without much help 4rm d forum ( ) ...

I accidentally uninstalled a device named Unknown in Add or Remove Hardware wizard (shown by ticking option: show hidden devices).. During uninstallation of device, an error dialog popped up saying tht device cudnt be uninstalled coz a descendant (which might be a boot device ) did not allow it..
Then i checked the device manager and almost everything was uninstalled 4rm there.. only mayb a dozen or less entries in total remained... Usb drivers, display, modem drivers, audio drivers, cellphone, mp3 player etc., all drivers had been uninstalled and i had 2 install them again...

And then the problem was fixed

I got all sound back again.... 8) 8)
