Hi,

I own a P-III machine and i am having some problems with my existing motherboard. The machine hangs anytime and doesn't boot for some time.
So i am planning to buy a new motherboard and maybe processor as well.

I have the following queries:

1) If i buy a new Intel based board (which supports P-IV), will i be able to use my existing P-III processor with the new motherboard. In simple terms, r the latest Intel motherboards backward compatible?

2) If the answer to the above query is no, then i would have to buy a new motherboard (AMD based) as well as processor and may be RAM.
So, which motherboard, processor, RAM should i go for?

My budget for these 3 things is around Rs. 10,000.

Also, i don't really require a gaming oriented configuration as i already own a Sony PS2. So, any motherboard with good onboard graphics will do...

Thanks in advance!

Yah, i can invest few more bucks for the socket 939 motherboard.
In that case, i think i would have to buy Athlon 3000+ board (939).

So, i think my configuration would be:

Motherboard: 939 Socket board
Processor: AMD Athlon 3000+ (939 socket)
RAM: Transcend 512 MB DDR400

Are the above specs. fine.

Regarding motherboard i think i have the following options:

1) Asus A8N-E Socket 939
2) MSI RS480M2-IL Socket 939 (Onboard Graphics: 128 MB)

I think Asus board is costlier.

Please recommend a good 939 socket board which fits my pocket.

Thanks in advance!!!

ASUS A8N-E doesnt have onboard VGA so i dont think u will want to go for it .. prices have fallen now and i think u will easily get AMD ATHLON 64 3000+ 939 Pin + MSI RS480-M2 for around 11,000/- .. this is the best u can get with onboard vga. this is a very good board and is highly in demand these days.

With Asus A8N-E, you will need a graphics card .. that will increase your budget .. therfore the MSI RS480M2-IL board is the best option for you.

1. no.... it won't support PIII, you have to buy all the three components.
if you want to go with intel, take 865GBF, 2.4GHz and 512 DDR[400MHz]. i hope that it will cover your budget. i can't give you the prices cuz.. it will be diff compared with my place. i'm very satisfied with Inet 865GBF.

2. go for AMD 3000+ (939)+ 939 socket board + 512 DDR. don't have a idea with cost.
