Is the Sony DRU800 another Lite-on OEM drive? If so stay away!!! I gave my drive in for repairs 2 months ago. It sure did not work well when new either. They kept saying I should do all this stuff like getting different disks and trying this and that and I wasted months and so much money. The liteon's will not write @ 4x to Moser Bear -R @ 4x. Its a bug in the software and I don't care what anyone says. It can still write to the disk by cheating and telling it its some other disk. But it don't write very well. Even the latest and greatest don't work @ 16x. And it don't write to Cd's now either. For India, Pioneer is the best. Nec is much faster and preferable but you cant get it here. BENQ is Phillips and they are great for +R media. So if you can get +R media I would go for that. But I have only seen -R media around. Pioneer is one of the slowest drives in the market. But hey it works.

Well that too but I mean Phillips uses Benq/Acer as their DVD source and Sony owns Liteon which uses mediateck chipsets. But chipsets alone are not the problem since some Plextor uses Sanyo/Optowrite chipsets especially if it uses that disk compression stuff but plextor is always a good drive. So its all around quality, compatability and software. Mediateck really screwed up their DVD -R format and now fixing it. Since Sony was a +R company to begin with. So was Phillips and Benq... And Pioneer was a -R while LG/Hitachi was a DVD-RAM. Although they all cross licence each other now, you can see it in their drives where their strengths lie. It takes a few years to catch up in techonology.

None of the big japanese companies have made their own drives for like 5 years now. It is much cheaper to let the chinese and koreans do it. I am not sure who makes Pioneer... But it sure aint manufactured in Japan because it would cost 200-300% more... Samsung just changed their chip set so even they know what using a good chipset does...

hey its a good thing computer related companies do not go into making cars and things like Trains or Planes....

Murder is such a strong word... Slow strangulation.. Well.... Guess they wont be inviting me to any of bill gates speeches. I would have died of laughter when his computer crashed during his presentation.

My opinion:
1. Benq 16X burner : Benq 1600/1620 ->Same drive (1600), can be flashed into the 1620 (done by the company themselves) , officially using a Benq sanctioned firmware.Superb reviews out at CDRLabs and CDFreaks, indicate this is "THE" drive to own.
Cost: rs. 3500

Benq 1640 : rs. 4k. All formats and 16x.

2. Sony 720-b
A very good drive, only the second best after benQ
Cost: rs. 3.9k

3. LG-4120B and 4160B
The good thing about LD drives is the can write almost all formats, including DVD- RAM
Cost: 4K

NEC gives good writing speeds but unfortunetly not marketed in India.

LG advertises its drive as the world's first ALL fromat DVD writer. If that is true why do you people prefer Benq over it.

Please advice.

Basically there are 3 formats:
 DVD-R
 DVD+R
 DVD-RAM

The last one (DVD-RAM) is rarely ever used. So even though other manufacturers don't support DVD-RAM, it is not an issue.

Basically there are only 3 manufacturers you should consider while buying a DVD writer:
 NEC
 BenQ
 Pioneer

Sadly NEC is not marketed in India. But if you can get it from abroad, do so. It costs just over 40$ on Newegg. By far the cheapest drive and has great write quality.

Pioneer is available in India, but tough to find. But it's a pretty good buy.

BenQ is available in India and reasonably priced. The 1640 might be hard to find right now. If you need a writer immediately, buy the 1620 else wait for the 1640.
