Logging in root is a bad practise because in case you delete some system files, you are doomed!! So, always log in as a normal user. In case you need to install any application, go to the terminal and type 'su'(without quotes). You will be prompted for a password. Enter the root's password here. Install the necessary apps and type exit twice to close the terminal. To install kino, follow the steps which desertwind has suggested.
